Jeans and button-down shirt: Dorky?

Hmm? Seems ok to me, but who am I to judge?

Not ideal, but can be okay, as long as you observe the tuck rules: long sleeve, tuck; short sleeve, do not tuck!

Why must one tuck with long sleeves? Jeans and a button down are sexy, tucked or untucked. (in my not quite humble opinion)

I don’t make the rules, I just work here.

I am wearing that now…you’ll have to ask my co-workers if I look dorky or not

Everybody wears jeans and button-down - it’s super super common…

I never thought that there was anything the least bit wrong with that combination. If you ask my opinion, I would say of course it’s perfectly fine.

Then I remembered in fact I only wear buttoned blouses/shirts with dress pants Monday through Thursday. On Friday I go to work in jeans and always long-sleeved microfiber tees or the equivalent.

Tucking in or hanging out is a question that can only be resolved on a case-by-case basis, for a woman. Men’s shirts are always the same length and are made for tucking in if you don’t want to look like a slob. Women’s shirttails can be either long or short or nonexistent. Sometimes women’s shirttails are short and flared, i.e. designed to go outside the pants.

One thing to think about, for the men at least, is how ‘dressy’ the button down is. You wouldn’t want to wear a really nice shirt with some crappy, ill-fitting jeans. And if the shirt and jeans are really nice and fitted, tucking is a likely option. Depends on the situation as well - if you’re at work you might want to wear the nicer clothes and tuck, if you’re going out you could go more casual and not tuck. Short-sleeved dress shirts are pretty ugh though, but that’s IMO.

But this look is not dorky, it’s very common and can look very cute. It’s a look favored at least sometimes by pretty much every male I know, family included.

Oooooh, one of my favorite looks…well-fitting jeans, white button-down with the sleeves rolled up, tucked at the waist…can’t beat it on a guy!

When I lived at Ft. Benning, Georgia back in the eighties, the fashion writer for the Columbus Ledger and Enquirer Newspapers wrote this really great article about the glories of the white button-down and jeans. I wish I’d saved the article. I can’t recall the guy’s name right now, but I’ll do a little research and see if I can find it

I’m with kittenblue. It isn’t dorky; it can be damn sexy on the right man.

Why wouldn’t a short-sleeved, button-down shirt be tucked in? My rule would be if the shirt would be tucked in with dressier pants, tuck it in. If it wouldn’t, leave it out.

Casual Friday?

This is almost the standard clubbing outfit for guys now-
long sleeve button down shirt, sleeves either rolled up, or if its really cold, at least uncuffed and flipped open, and untucked, with jeans, with the top 2 buttons open.

Tucking in a long sleeve shirt and going to a club isn’t really comfortable, and wearing it untucked with funkier, club appropriate dress pants looks horrible, so you are stuck with jeans(probably $150+ jeans, but still jeans).

When it’s warm enough outside to start wearing more club appropriate short sleeve shirts, then the fucky dress pants can come back out of the closet.

What shoes, then?

Weeguns - a classic or too predictable?

Chuck Tayors - too wannabe?

Suede hikers - too much of a functional contrast to the shirt?

Yikes, I hope it’s not too dorky. I pretty much only wear jeans and what I recently learned are called “camp shirts”, short sleeve cotton button down shirts with, uhh…what do you call it, patterns? Lines? Plaid, maybe?

what color is the shirt and what shade is the denim on the jean?

You need a pair of black boots, similar to:

wear with black belt(duh), a silver watch or bracelet, and a silver necklace to fill in the open buttons around the neck

Those pretty much go with any shirt, but it’s good to have a camel colored or lighter brown shade boot or shoe as well…dark brown really doesnt matter so much, since it’s so close to black. There are a few colors that just look better with the lighter brown on(match with brown belt too)…but like I said, black goes with everything

similar to this look–it’s not too hard to pull off

Jeans and button-down shirts are my natural state of dress September through April.

I’ve never felt comfortable wearing long-sleeve shirts untucked. Short sleeves can go untucked, but an untucked long-sleeve requires, I think some very intentional selecting of the shirt and the rest of the outfit as well. And it always makes you look like you’re trying to look like a clothing model, IMHO.

The shirt has to be cut the right way, if its not tapered through below the chest, it just hangs down and looks horrible

Look for shirts that are called “modern” cut(I’m sure there are other names but I see that one alot).

I am currently wearing a button-down long-sleeved shirt that is tailored for a busty woman (which I am!) and a pair of snug fitting, slightly flared jeans. The shirt is untucked and the top and bottom buttons are undone. I’ve been told that it is an extremely flattering look for me (actually, I was told I looked damned HOT).

Is it hard to find jeans with a button fly? At least the message is obvious, though.
