I have a 06 Wrangler Unlimited. I’d say a couple months ago, when filling up, I noticed the auto cut off wouldn’t kick in until gasoline had already started spilling out. I can hear the gasoline getting close to the top and when it used to cut off, it cuts off about 5 seconds later.
Now, I listen and try and guess when it’s close and let go of the handle to stop it, but sometimes I’m still too late and maybe a quarter of a cup spills out.
It’s really irritating. I have an extended warrantee that I assume will cover something like this, but before bringing it in, I thought I’d try to find out what was causing it myself, and if, in fact, it was the way I was holding he nozzle or something I was doing wrong.
It happens at different gas stations, so I assume it has to do with the Jeep and not the pumps.
It seriously just started in August maybe. No accidents. No conscious change in my fill up procedure. The car was driven maybe once or twice between April 15th and June 9th or so.
I had an '04 Wrangler with the same problem. I had an '91 Renegade with the same problem, plus a broken float (so 1/8 tank on my gauge actually meant empty - found that out the hard way). Another recommendation for backing off a little from full insertion.
I’ll bet you could find about 1,000 threads in various Jeep forms about problems with the gas tank on Wranglers.
My mother has an '03 Wrangler with the opposite problem – most pumps will not dispense gas if the nozzle is fully inserted. Pulling the nozzle back seems to work (even though it sometimes looks like the nozzle might fall out).
Huh. This is how one finds out. Mine ('04 Liberty) cuts off just in the nick of time. This is a real drag since most stations around here are full-serve and they always want to round it off. All it takes is one more cent to make it overflow. It never occurred to me that this would be a Jeep issue.
