Jeep (or car) Hard Top Removal Question (Hoist)

I need a hoist for the hard top on my Jeep Wrangler. I’ve seen a couple of different types, but I don’t want to just choose one that might potentially suck. Does anyone have a good hoist system that they would / would not recommend? Any suggestions?

If you are young, you can unscrew all the screws, stand in the back of your jeep and stand up while holding the hardtop. Walk off your jeep with the hardtop on your back. Reverse this process to put it back on. It’s what I did.

On the other hand, you can get a pair of packing straps, some rope and a pulley. Suspend pulley from ceiling, poass straps under hardtop, pull on rope. Total cost, about $20.00

The ‘hunchback’ method is what I have used to move the top around – I didn’t even think about using it to take it off of the Jeep. Thanks for the strap suggestion, too.

Thanks for the help.

If anyone has anything else to add, I’d appreciate any more suggestions.

Hey there, how goes it?
I seriously doubt that you want to try this but, a buddy of mine who used to own a hardtop jeep came up with something that i thought was rather stupid but did work. Hey had car-port to park his jeep under and rigged up this system. He took 4 eye bolts, drilled the hardtop and secured them to the top. He then attached a small hand winch to the car port wall and ran the line up to the ceiling through a pulley and down to four hooks which went onto the eye bolts. He then lifted the top off with the winch and just left it hanging there till he wanted to put it back on. I’m not a car expert and never thought to ask him if it was the original hard-top or not, but it still looked pretty funny with the four eye bolts attached driving down the road.

most of these folks are big into cars/trucks

Thanks for help/info.

JB – I don’t think that I’ll be trying the eye-bolt thing just yet – not on a three-week old top, anyway. Maybe next week.
Rectangle – Thanks for the links. Where were you Saturday for the Dopefest?
