Semi-Off topic, but this right here is the perfect analogy of what is wrong with politics today.
Average SDMB person: I don’t know Jeff Dunham, I feel he is lowbrow and racist.
Second ASDMBP : I disagree, I find him humorous, usually.
First ASDMBP: You are wrong, and all the folks here that agree with me prove me right.
Second ASDMBP: But there are just as many folks agreeing with me?
First ASDMBP: I can’t hear you! LALALALALA fingers in ears
Of course, humor is subjective, that is true. I find him funny, but I also love Carlin, enjoy Demitri Martin, and find Louis CK to be quite good.
I’m just not into ventriloquism. I’m not really familiar with his material enough to determine whether he’s racist. I just think he’s not funny based on the two minutes I once subjected myself to.
This is a gross exaggeration of his act, which I presume you engaged in for the subversive thrill of getting to post the word “nigger” on an internet messageboard.
You want a cite for the fact that I don’t hold people who like him in high regard? Or do you want a cite for the fact that I don’t think people who like him are very smart? As for the racism, you don’t find a jalapeno pepper wearing a sombrero and talking like an extra from a 1970s era Dorito commercial racist?
It always amazes that some blue staters think they are so much smarter than red staters. Yet blue state hs dropout rates are higher take my state of Cali for example. Go figure. Moronic elitism is as annoying as anything in the red states.
The fact that Jeff Dunham is so popular despite the fact that he is pretty much racist, hacky and unfunny doesn’t bother me so much as the fact that he is so popular despite being a fucking ventriloquist.
No, I said the racism was a not a big part of his act. Jose Jalapeno on a Stick is only about 10 minutes of his act. And when I went to see him live, he didn’t use Jose at all.
IIRC Jeff built his own helicopter from a kit. That takes a buttload of time and attention to detail as well as a fair bit of intelligence to boot. I think there is even an at least mildly amusing video of him taking Walter for a ride in it out there somewhere. Or maybe thats how he smuggled Jose across the border one moonless night. I forget which.
I really don’t like Dunham or any other intentionally “red state” comics, but I will say that Dunham’s appearance on 30 Rock was extremely funny. Great example of both good ventriloquism and good insult comedy.
What makes him intentionally “red state”? Maybe he’s done something recently I haven’t seen, but while he has Achmed which, sure, a lot of red staters like, he also had Bubba J, who basically embodied every stereotype of the Southern NASCAR-lovin’ cousin-kissin’ white trash yokel. (And wasn’t very funny, even though I don’t think much of NASCAR myself.)
It’s like calling Christopher Titus a red state comedian for bagging on the French and Al-Qaeda in one of his acts, even though he turns right around and makes merciless fun of Bush and guns.
