Jefferson, USA.

For a long time I’ve occasionally heard of people pining for a new state, made up of southern Oregon and nothern California. Usually this new state would be named Jefferson, but I’ve heard other proposals too.
The idea isn’t as popular as splitting CA (an idea which seems to be popular in all other states) but it’s out there. Really “out there”.
Here’s a site from some of the nuts who like the idea.
I guess my question is actually “Why do so many want to mess with CA?” Except for New Mexico, we’re probably the coolest state in the union.
Opinions and comments?

The way I’ve understood it, the residents of northernmost California (and, for that matter, southernmost Oregon) feel unrepresented by the state as a whole. They feel frustrated that their interests tend to be (in their minds) ignored, that the candidates they prefer tend to lose in the state as a whole.

It’s found in some other states. For instance, eastern Washington doesn’t care for western Washington.

Yeah. And I’ve always said we should get rid of Long Island. Give it to Vermont or something.

But then you’d lose Bill O’Reilly, much admired spokesman for New York.

Of course, since Queens is attached to “Long Island” (I’m guessing you mean Nassau and Suffolk counties), who is this “we” you speak of?

Sssshhhhhh. It’s a secret.

So were North America and South America, at one time. Same for Egypt and, what was it at the time? Palestine?
I propose “The Queens Canal.” Or, better yet, “The O’Reilly Canal.”
A big ;), of course.

I’d happily split California into six states, since they’d end up with 12 senators (and 10 more electoral votes), at least 8-9 of whom would likely still be Blue State types (IMHO of course).

Of course, not to be outdone, the damned Texans would then split up into 100 states, all of which were gerrymandered to elect two GOP Senators each…

just noodling

I know lots of people who wouldn’t be averse to splitting up Pennsylvania into east and west parts. I don’t like the idea of that, since western PA would be a guaranteed red state. But I don’t have to worry, it won’t happen anyway.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing any new states or any split states anytime soon.

People like 50. It’s a nice round number.

Now if each state split and we ended up with 100, then we would have something.

We would have Michi and Gan, Penn and Sylvania, Cali and Fornia.

Of course the states of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation (now two sepeartae states) would both be quite tiny.

I think I’m over tired.

Actually, I don’t want CA to split. I just want to fix up our silly election system so’s we can rule the country…
[Austrian accent]As is our RIGHT[/A-a].
Just you wait 'till Arnold gets his ammendment.

:waves hand in air: OOOH! OOOH! I think I wanna live in Fornia!!!

That’s Fornia, not Fornica! Too much RHCP, huh.
