How do they do it? I mean, the popcorn really tastes like popcorn, the peanut butter really tastes like peanut butter…the snazzberries taste like snazzberries.
if we can create such authentic flavors in a tiny little candy, how far away are we from a little roastbeef dinner candy, injected with vitamins and protein and such…just like we’ve seen in ‘life of tomorrow’ comic strips?
I’ve got a feeling that Jelly Belly beans do contain authentic flavourings, so the peanut butter ones really contain peanuts, the popcorn ones really contain finely ground roasted corn (or some sort of extract), little wonder then that they taste authentic.
I’m not sure that just because it says “natural flavorings” that the flavoring is actually from substance it’s supposed to taste like. It’s just not something made by man.
So if they find a natural substance that tastes like, say, popcorn, but is actually extracted from squid gonads, and it’s cheaper or possibly more condusive to the Jelly Belly manufacturing process than ground-up popcorn, they can use it and say “naturally flavored” because it comes from nature.
At least, that what I always assumed. Corrections/clarifications are welcome.
Better living through chemistry, mostly. If you are ever in northern California it’s worth a side trip to take the free factory tour. You get to wear a little hat and everything.
I’d say pretty far. Food is a social event and sharing food is one f the ways to tie yourself to a community. While “instant breakfasts” and such are gaining in popularity, I doubt seriously they will ever take over. If they did, what would we do with our hands while we talked?
