Jeopardy discussion

We watched half of the Wednesday Championship episode tonight, but I have to say that an hour and a half of Jeopardy per night for two weeks is a bit too much. I think we may just watch the regular games and give the quarter and semifinals a miss.

They were promoting it heavily during regular Jeopardy for a couple weeks now, with pop ups and graphics during the actual show. If you have Hulu it is also available there the following day.

And yeah, I love Jeopardy but 3 episodes per day for two weeks is a lot!

Agreed. My wife and I have decided to consume the tournament on the weekends. Maybe it’ll get spoiled for us, maybe not, but there’s no way we’ll watch it all in a timely manner along with the regular episodes.

I agree, watch it on the weekends. It’ll last a while.

I was going to make a snarky comment on how these college whiz kids today have big gaps in their knowledge. Henry VIII 2nd wife was Marie Antoinette? That’s just embarrassing.

But then everybody got Winston Churchill and I didn’t.

Well, Henry’s wives and Marie had one thing in common.

I too am surprised by the college kids’ lack of knowledge. I try to put myself in their place of being back when I was done with high school, and I think I would so better than they are doing. Perhaps the contestants are so focused on their subject area that they don’t have a broad range of knowledge. Or maybe kids don’t read encyclopedias while eating breakfast anymore like I used to do.

I’m liking when the contestants from the big Ivy League schools are getting trounced by students in smaller colleges - hah!

Musicals?

Or when the football school with the inclusive admissions policy coughLSUcough beats Stanford.

I remember watching GE College Bowl every week as a kid (hosted by … Allen Ludden, I think?) and it seemed there was always a team from Brandeis. Just like this week on Jeopardy.

Mrs. Cretin and I used to watch GECB in 1970 (?); Allen Ludden is who I think I remember hosting.

(Later) My memories were mixed up. I do remember Ludden hosting CB, but only into the early 60’s when he moved over to Password. By the time Mrs.C and I were watching CB together there had been a different host for several years.

When Allen Ludden left College Bowl he was replaced by Robert Earle. I wonder if Betty White was fooled.

Allen Ludden

Robert Earle

I can take or leave the three-episodes-a-day format. What gets me is that the theme during Final Jeopardy in the tournament seems to be played by the Le Petomane Memorial Marching Band.

Yeah, the tuba-heavy theme has to go. My wife said she’ll be glad when this edition ends so she doesn’t have to listen to it anymore.

Count me as another non-fan of the tuba version of the Final Jeopardy jingle.

Of all the instruments they could have emphasized… of course next time, to spite us, they may go Full Accordion…

I’m finally catching up on my accumulated DVR recordings and am watching the prime-time college tournament. In the first episode, I think Mayim describes this as the first college tournament. So are they still going to have the college tournament during the regular syndicated show?

Bagpipes?

They know what PCR stands for, but not one knew what Fallopian tubes are? Including the women? Don’t they teach sex ed anymore? Biology?

eta in the second game, they had a question about curling. Funny - we snuck in the jeopardy episode between women’s and men’s curling games today.

This is weird. They’ve not been showing the college championship in Hawaii, just the regular play. I think they’ll show it next week. I wonder if that means this past week we’ve seen what they’ll show you guys after the tournament.

The college championship is a separate show. It’s airing in primetime.

And the contestant who won the game was pre-med!

I think it’s more that familiarity with Latin roots is waning in our society. The clue required you to surmise what “oviduct” means.
