“Southern rock” was misleading.

“Southern rock” was misleading.
I knew the Farragut quote immediately, but there’s less than a 1% chance that I will know any rock album title, so I guessed. Figuring that the whole quote was too long, I went with full speed ahead.
“You may fire when ready, Gridley.”
(“Unfortunately for the Spanish, Gridley was ready.”)
The only particularly famous quote from a Civil War admiral is Farragut’s “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”, so it was easy for me to get. I didn’t know whose album it was from, so whether or not Tom Petty counts as southern didn’t enter my mind (although I will note that he did have a song and album called “Southern Accents,” so it’s not that far-fetched to call him a southern rocker).
No. I thought it pretty clearly just wanted one name and was glad they reversed ruling her correct. There were soooo many times during her run where she did not seem to read the clue properly.
I ran the list of Southern rockers in my head, snd Tom Petty never came up. He might be from Florida, but his sound isnt “southern rock” to me…
More like “Generic Rock” than Southern Rock.
The clue was “This classic album by a Southern rocker…”
Petty’s music wasn’t pure Southern rock (like the Allman Brothers or Marshall Tucker), but he was a rocker from the South, so I guess the clue was correct in that sense.
I had the same experience. Didn’t think of Petty.
They could have been clearer. How about
This individual from a pair of “Through the Looking Glass” characters fits the category.
88 characters-plus-spaces, versus 87 for the one they actually used.
Tweedledee and Tweedledum should never be separated (and bonus if I get name-checked too!)
(6/24) I bet some Dopers knew that rifle caliber, as well as said it aloud in Edward Woodward’s voice.
The Washington Post has an article today about the run of winning streaks this season. Here is a gift link: Confounded by Winning Streak
Living in Gainesville, I never think of Tom Petty any other way.
Between the NBA finals and Stanley Cup, Jeopardy here has been pre-empted more often than not the last two weeks. But when they pre-empted it for the NBA draft…my God, that’s too far. This aggression will not stand, man.
It was when they preempted it for the Jan 6 insurrection that it became personal for me.

Yeah, what the hell is it with the Stanley Cup in June? I thought ice hockey was a winter sport. What are they trying to pull?
my 2 cents Final choice Ken and Mayim for specials.
I don’t think of Tom Petty as a “Southern rocker,” but I guess he was born in Florida.

Don’t forget Lynyrd Skynyrd.
[Tom Petty] might be from Florida, but his sound isn’t “southern rock” to me…
(Et cetera)
Poorly written indeed! Apparently, they meant “a person from the South who plays Rock,” not “a person who plays Southern Rock.”
Many here agree that Petty is in the first group but not the second. OTOH, Wikipedia includes Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in their List of Southern Rock Bands.

Tom Petty is originally from Florida (Gainesville), but the reason I don’t think of him as a “Southern Rocker” is that I don’t think of Florida as part of The South. It is geographically south of Georgia, but its culture is not like Alabama, etc (altho maybe the Panhandle might be).
He is not alone.
REM are from Georgia (Athens), but nobody thinks of THEM as Southern Rock.
Jimmy Buffet was born in Mississippi (Pascagoula), and eventually settled in Florida (Key West), but nobody thinks of HIM as Southern Rock.
Dr John & The Neville Brothers are from Louisiana (New Orleans), but nobody thinks of THEM as Southern Rock.
Perhaps we’re over-thinking this.
Between the NBA finals and Stanley Cup, Jeopardy here has been pre-empted more often than not the last two weeks.
To preempt or not is up to the local station.

Not to mention the B-52s
