(I looked back as far as September 1 and don’t see a thread for this new season.)
I’ve missed two of the eight episodes shown so far (in this market) due to the ABC-affiliate weatherman deciding that storms in the area meant he’d found his chance for stardom. (I’m being a bit cynical as on neither day were there any injuries at all, and very little damage, from said storms.)
Anyway, we’re well underway with no obvious star emerging yet.
I missed the first week due to Disney and DirectTv arguing about who gets more money. I’m not impressed with any contestant so far. Quite a few dim bulbs.
Well, after a summer of Tournament of Champions, Masters, and Second Chance reruns, regular players in a regular game wouldn’t look quite as impressive.
Still, I like that we’re back to regular games. Nothing wrong with the “specials,” but there were just so many of them with so many excellent players. With regular players, I feel like I have at least some chance.
Yes, it’s as though we’re talking about two entirely different shows: one in which you marvel at the speed and depth of knowledge of exceptional people, and another one in which you can compare yourself, often favorably, with bright, well-informed, but not extraordinary people.
Eh, he was pleasant enough, but it was kind of annoying how Ken kept making priest jokes throughout the episode.
Also, the other contestants weren’t called on as “Teacher Jen” or “Attorney Chris.” Why did we need to hear “Father Steve” every time he rang in instead of just “Steve”?
I noticed that, too. Doctors aren’t referred to as “Dr. [name]”, military personnel aren’t “Lieutenant [name]”. As a matter of fact, they don’t even say their rank in the beginning, or the meet and greet. Or say what they do in the military.
I was the one who mentioned the newly ordained priest here, thinking it was a novelty for the show. I too was also wondering about calling him Father throughout the episode. Surely there have been other members of the clergy in past years, but I don’t recall what they got called. So many choices that you’d think we’d remember someone being addressed as Father, Pastor, Rabbi, Sister, and the like.
Do they ask contestants how they would like to be addressed? My parish is where newly ordained priests just out of seminary often start, and some are so eager and excited about their new role. I could imagine he was so proud of his ordination that he asked to be addressed as Father.
Or with Ken’s religious background, was he trying to be more respectful?
I’m another who was a little bothered by Ken’s frequent referral’s to the priest’s religion. But as I recall, the priest wrote his name for the podium as “Fr. Steve,” so maybe he was expecting to be addressed as “Father Steve.” At any rate, he didn’t seem to be bothered by Ken’s referrals, and took them all in good humour.
Just finished watching Tuesday’s episode, and this new champion—whew! He’s doing well, after only two days. Fast on the buzzer, knowledgeable, confident, and willing to take chances on the Daily Doubles. So far, after two days, he’s just shy of $60K. Are we going to see another Matt, Amy, or Mattea here?
I was hoping David would have a long run, and was sorry to see him struggle on Thursday’s episode (I’m a few days behind). He still had a chance to squeak out a win from third if not for Maddie’s small wager on the triple-stumper FJ - which, by the way, I thought was pretty easy. Mae West.
Has anyone noticed that the category lights up when a clue is selected.
It seems that TPTB at J! are aware that viewers at home can easily forget which category they are in, depriving us of an essential fact in determining our at-home reply. (such as “begins and ends with E”. so for example, “ebony” is not a correct reply!)
But it seems they still miss the point. We need to see it along with the clue, not flashing for a second, distracting from the clue, and then disappearing. I think it is worse this way.
Also, there sure do seem to be a lot of triple stumpers lately.
I missed the first couple minutes of today’s show. During the interview segment, the champion said that he’s a curler, and I wondered if he might be in my neck of the woods, and whether I might bump into him. So I went to j-archive to see where he’s from. “Originally from Vermont”, so who knows.
But I noticed that they also describe this episode as the first with a remodeled set:
I noticed that, and wondered when that started. Apparently, yesterday. Did we really need that?
eta: I know this is the J! thread, not the WOF thread, (in Phoenix, WOF runs immediately before J!, so we end up seeing the final spin) but it’s nice to see they finally finished decorating the Wheel set. Ever since the New Guy took over it looked like an empty warehouse. Paradoxically, it looked smaller as an empty set. But last night, they had plants and cars and rocks and things. Back to normal!
