Hammond wasn’t always innocent. I can’t recall the episode or the context, but I remember him complaining that he couldn’t use a certain word to describe some people, because the BBC judged it offensive. The camera cut away to the hood of a car, where he had placed a meat pie next to a key.
King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands famously has a part-time job as an airline pilot for KLM.. That’s a job worth doing, I’d say.
And he is totally different with the kids he judges on Master Chef than he is with the adults, but even with the adults, he’s different from the way he acts on Hell’s Kitchen.
Guy Fieri is really one of those conundrums. Everything about his public persona is off-putting, if not repulsive.
However, in his private life, by all reports, he is a really good guy, and I haven’t seen anything to suggest that he has actively done anyone any harm.
I would not go that far. He has the over-the-top “douchebag bro” kind of persona going on, but it’s not repulsive. It’s just annoying. Or annoying to us. I don’t recall him ever doing anything that is actually offensive, or putting down people, or anything like that. Mind you, I can’t stand more than a segment of his show at a time, because it gets to me, too, but I’ve never seen anything mean-spirited from him.
I know one person IRL who is like Guy, or Guy dialed down to about 70%. Just over-the-top positive about everything – when he left the company I was working for he even quoted “the future’s so bright I gotta wear shades” in his farewell email. He just oozed way too much positivity for my idea of a normal human being, that it felt like a complete put-on. He was like a frat boy crossed with a Care Bear (maybe throw in a little Poochie from the Simpsons). I just think my somewhat cynical self has only so much positivity it could take before feeling like he’s being fed a treacly plate of shit. But, as far as I know, he’s always been heartfelt, kind, and generous. Yet I can only stand him in small doses.
I used to watch his Diners show and I enjoyed it and him. I used to make a list of the places his show made me want to visit in the hope that some day, I’d get to try a bunch of them out, but the older I get, the less I believe I’ll ever get around to it.
But his new shows have just not been my cuppa. Grocery games and crap like that is not for me.
Small sample size, sure, but I’d say if you have a choice between a few places and one was on DDD, it’s probably a good bet.
Unless it’s overcrowded due to the show’s notoriety, but I also never experienced that. Maybe if I’d gone right after it first appeared on the show or something, but in each case it had been years later.
I’ll also point out, in addition to what the stand up comedian clip above said, Guy also gives away money to just about everyone and he personally likes to go provide food to the firefighters in California fighting wildfires.
Speaking of Guy Fieri, a decade ago he had a big restaurant in Times Square aimed at the tourist crowd. The New York Times gave it a review that’s worth reading (gift link).
The restaurant closed but not until five years later.
Actually, I know a woman who worked for Guy Fieri and she still says he is a wonderful person. He gave her an opening to start in her media career and she learned a lot about cooking on the way. And when she felt it was time for her to move on, he let her go gently to continue her own path. They are still friends.
