I believe the point she was trying to make is that if you do criticize it, don’t expect to be greeted with open arms by the government you just criticized.
Of course, you knew that’s what she meant - or at least you should have- and you’re just being a shit-stirrer, as usual.
Actually, i believe that Americans should speak up about Kenyan corruption, and corruption anywhere else for that matter.
But…
If Americans do this, they should not be surprised if the objects of their criticism wave them away dismissively. After all, the United States government, and many of its people, have shown themselves singularly unresponsive to criticisms of their own behavior from people outside of America. Hell, i’ve heard people, including folks on these board, explicitly state that the rest of the world should mind its own fucking business and that we should not care what they say about American problems and policies.
Also, it seems to me that Americans truly concerned about corruption and government cronyism have plenty to criticize at home right now, without having to go half way around the world to find it. Many Americans are very good at turning their powers of analysis and critique on other people’s problems, while ignoring the ones right under their noses.
Let’s be equally honest and note that he was there not to make some rhetorical point about Kenyan corruption, but to use the country and one of its citizens as a backdrop for a publicity stunt to promote his book. I don’t want him locked up n Kenya though, I would rather he live free and clear in America under an Obama administration.
