Jesus FUCK how do people deal with Windows????

All you Mac lovers may be pleased to read that Stephen Fry isn’t very keen on PCs either.

Wow, I can’t believe that made “news” … I actually subscribe to his twitter feed and got all those messages on my cell phone. I even shot back at him, saying “Overreact much? Wow.”

Isn’t comparing Macs to PCs kind of comparing apples to oranges (pun!)?

A Mac is a complete package, built from the ground up where the hardware is built for the OS and vice-versa. Even most of the periferals (ok, Airport) are specific to the manufacturer. The software available is limited and more fine-tuned to work with the smaller market of the OS.

A PC, on the other hand, is a mishmash of whatever components that were not necessarily built with the OS in mind. The software available is massive and written by anyone, anywhere.

Granted, this doesn’t solve the OP’s problem (where’d she go, anyway?) but I couldn’t believe that Stephen Fry was blaming his problems solely on Vista - not on the Vaio’s components, not the drivers, not on the router. Just Vista. Seems like a lot Mac users forget that Windows is just an OS and nothing more.

In fact, that’s one of the very things I dislike about Windows.

I can understand and appreciate that. But that is their business model. That’s how they got to be what they are today.

Gates set out to make his money making an OS that will run on any cobbled-together (or IBM-built) machine. Jobs set out to make the perfect machine. Thus, Gates’ stuff is cheaper and more widely used while Jobs’ stuff is more expensive but more solid (which still doesn’t mean Gates’ stuff is less solid overall because he is not the one who built the machine).

Being unhappy with Windows because it’s not a complete computer is like being mad at BP because their gas doesn’t make your Festiva a Ferarri.

To me that would be annoying as hell. When I download things I like to organize them by subject. Download an Astronomy program? Into My Documents/Astronomy. Download a movie trailer? My Documents/My Videos/Trailers. Etc.

I like organization. I spell out where I want things downloaded.

The existence of a default downloads folder does not preclude you from downloading your files where you want them, or moving them there later.
Duh.

Nothing wrong with Windows in this instance, its ignorance pure and simple. You wouldn’t expect to sit down and start operating, say, a large earth mover without getting some information about how to use it first, right? Why then would you expect to sit down in front of a very complex piece of software (the operating system) and expect to be able to use it without problems?

Because computers are so ubiquitous that everyone *does *expect to be able to use them easily. Maybe an incorrect assumption, but as everyone knows several people who can use computers instictively, they think that they should be able to, too. At this level, I don’t think that either Windows or the Mac O/S is actually intuitive enough.

Yes, definitely PEBKAC.

This is a simple case of PBKC (Problem is Between Keyboard and Chair). They are common.
