Jesus of Suburbia - lyrics a la beckwall

So I’ve been listening to American Idiot by Green Day. I could have sworn that Billy Joe was singing “Used to pop a Ritalin, now I have a dental plan” in the second song. I loved that so much, and I sang it out loud in front of people, who fell down laughing. So I checked the liner notes and imagine my chagrin when the actual words were quite different.

I like my version better.

Huh?

The actual lyrics from the song are:

On a steady diet of soda pop and ritalin,
No one ever died for my sins in hell,

Though how you got “Now I have a dental plan” from that, I’m not sure. Perhaps the singer studied at the Kingsmen/Kurt Cobain School of Diction?

Maybe I had a dental/mental fart. It just sounded too good to be true, catchy little lyrics, so I kept repeating them. :smack:

I still think my version is better.

Yeah, I thought he was saying something like, “Decided to pop a ritalin, no one ever died from it.” I think the reason is because of how the lyrical phrasing carries over different sections of the music. So, if you just hear an isolated phrase, you might get “soda pop = decided to pop.” I must admit your version is funny, and I can see how you could possibly hear it that way.
