Jesus Question

Was Jesus Christ a virgin? I know it’s a dumb question, but it’s been bothering me…

That’s the party line. Not that I’m the most qualified to answer.

Return question: why do you care?

Just something that’s been bugging me…I mean, the Bible kinda skips over the teenage years and all…makes you wonder…I mean, EVERYone has sinned, no one’s perfect, not even Jesus!

Why do we care that Mary was one?

**

Exactly…everyone KNOWS Mary was a virgin…what about Jesus, damnit???

I can believe Jesus was a virgin. But he surely masturbated.

Damn, I never thought of that…good call, cooldude!

John 8:46, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Hebrews 4:15, Hebrews 7:26, 1 Peter 2:22, and 1 John 3:5 all say that Jesus was without sin.

Acts 15:20, Acts 15:29, Acts 21:25, Romans 13:13, and 1 Thessalonians 4:3 all say that fornication or sexual immorality is a sin.

Fornication (sexual immorality) is sex outside of marriage.

Jesus was not married.

Hence, Jesus was a virgin.

The Bible does not address masturbation anywhere. Your conclusion that he must have masturbated is a leap.

We care that Mary was a virgin because Isaiah 7:14 says that the Messiah (Jesus) will be born to a virgin. If he doesn’t fulfill the prophecies about the Messiah, then He cannot be the Messiah.

Calling expressing your love for somebody a sin is one of the myriad of reasons why I find some religions ridiculous.

There are a lot of people on this board who are very knowledgable about the biblical and historical Jesus they might show up and give you a more to the point answer than a heathen like me

jamesglewisf how about after JC was born .

She was married so it wouldn’t of been a sin would it ?

I have heard of at least one brother called James .

There is a Cecil column about Iesu’s sibs, but I’m too lasy to post it here.

As regards Mary, I think the Catholics believe that Mary was, in essence, a ‘super-virgin’, in that she could have sex and still be virginal. So even if Mary did have kids AD, she’s still seen as a virgin by the faithful.

Here’s the link to Cecil’s column //www.straightdope.com/columns/990730.html

thx

It isn’t clear in Genesis whether Onan masturbated or just practiced early withdrawal. (38:8-10) But the Lord didn’t like it and killed him for it.

Some of our Old Testament or Tanahk experts might be able to shed some light on this.

Jesus was perfect. It says (clearly) that God was, and Jesus was/is God, therefore Jesus was perfect.

Mary was never without sin. Jesus did not need to be born to someone without sin. If Mary was without sin, why would she have said, “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47). Why would she need a Savior if she was without sin? Saved from what? She needed a savior, just like every other sinful human being needs a savior, to be saved from the penalty of her sin.

Jesus is the Son of God, born of a sinful, virgin woman. The only way you could know for sure that Jesus was the Son of God is if He was born of a virgin.

In other words, we know he wasn’t the physical son of Joseph, because Joseph and Mary did not have sex before Jesus’ birth. If Mary did not have sex with Joseph or any other man, and yet she was pregnant, how did it happen? Read Luke chapter one and you’ll see her ask this very question and have it answered.

Obviously, Mary did not remain a virgin. Jesus had several brothers who were the sons of Mary and Joseph.

BTW, expressing your love for someone by having sex is not a sin, as long as it is done within the confines of marriage. Mary having sex with her husband Joseph was not a sin. Never has been, never will be.

I disagree. I think it is clear what displeased God. You have to take it in context.

Gen 38:8-10
8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
9 And Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so it came about that when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground, in order not to give offspring to his brother.
10 But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.
(NAS)

The sin was that he did not perform his duty as a brother-in-law to her. He knew that the offspring would not be his, so he refused to give her any offspring. Most biblical scholars I know or that I have read say that it was early withdrawal, not masturbation. Regardless, the punishment was not for the method of withholding his seed, but for fact that he withheld it for selfish reasons.

By the way, if any of that sounded harsh, I apologize. Forum communciation is rather impersonal. I’m not mad or angry about any of the posts here. They are excellent questions, and this is a useful discussion.

One last thing, and then I’ll shut up and go to bed. Although I don’t believe that the Bible has anything to say about masturbation, I do believe it has something to say about lust. The problem with masturbation is that it is usually accompanied by fantasizing about some woman or fantasizing about her while looking at pictures of her, both of which are inappropriate. It often leads to looking at pornography, then addiction to pornography, and so on. So, you’re better off avoiding it.
