3> I assume Jesus’s family name was Christ. Was there anyone else with the same family name before or at that time ?

4> What’s Mary’s full name ? Mary Christ ?

I don’t recall the middle name, just the initial. Jesus H. Christ.

The H. stands for Howard, of course, as in “Howard be thy name.”

See What was Jesus’ real name

And for that matter, see Why do folks say “Jesus H. Christ”?

“Christ” wasn’t a family name; it’s really more of a title. It means “the messiah” or “the chosen one” or “the annointed one”, or something like that. Someone help me out here. The same thing goes for “Buddha”, which I believe means “the enlightened one”. Also, “Jesus” is a translation, kind of like “Christopher Columbus”, as Cecil pointed out in the first column that Desmostylus linked to above.

I don’t think that people in the time and place Jesus lived in had last or middle names like we do. A man’s father’s first name was in effect that man’s last name, I believe. I’m not sure about married, or for that matter unmarried, women.

  1. He didn’t have one, though he is often referred as Jesus H. Christ, and what the H means can be debated.

  2. I would say yes. Actually, when they found that stone box of wht is believed to be the brother of Jesus, they mentioned that 20 people at the time in the area may have had a brother named Jesus and father Joe. So it probably was quite common.

3-4)“Christ” actually means messiah in Greek (?). It obviously wasn’t some strange coincidence, he was given that name later on. So Jesus Christ really means ‘Jesus the Messiah’. This explains why you never hear “Mary Christ” or “Joe Christ”.

Jesus didn’t have a middle name.

The name “Jesus” is actually a Latinized form of Yeshua, which itself was a shortened form of Yehoshua. this name is often transliterated as Joshua. It was as common as dust in Jesus’s time (and still is for that matter)

“Christos” is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah.”
Messiah means “annointed one.” This was originally a title for Israelite kings. It was reference to the practice of annointing new kings with olive oil. In Jesus’ time, the Israelites were waiting for the coming of a new Jewish king, or “Messiah” who would liberate them from the Romans.

Jesus did not really have a last name as such, but he may have been referred to as Yeshua bar Yusef (Jesus, son of Joseph) or maybe he was Jesus of Nazereth or Jesus the carpenter.

Slight hijack here, but along the same lines.

My GF is the daughter of a former Pentacostal minister, so I asked her this question.

OK, JC was a carpenter by trade. Nothing much is documented between his birth and when he started preaching. My understanding is that he was around 30 then. Back in those days, they started working pretty young, especially in the family business. So, it’s safe to assume that he worked for say 18 years or so.

a) I wonder what kind of carpenter he was? Was he perfect? Did he do really good work or what? Did he have to screw up on purpose in order to retain his cover?

b) Just think, if this is true, then at some point many people must have owned something made by JC himself! too bad they didn’t realize it’s worth at the time. Just imagine, “How do you like my coffee table? Oh yes, it’s a Jesus!”

We’ll never know, but as a Pagan, I love asking her these kinds of questions!

Tapdancing.

Proving, once again, that Jesus was truly the Lord of the Dance.
