Jeter is done for the season

Story here.

Injured left ankle. The Yankees weren’t playoff contenders anyway, but ddamn they’ve had a crappy year personnel-wise.

Weren’t playoff contenders? They are 1 game back from the 2nd WC in the AL!

Not a surprise with the way things have been going. I hope he can recover and have a proper sendoff next season.

The Yankees still have a good chance to make the playoffs this year- of the 12 final games, 3 are against last place Toronto, 3 against last place Houston, 3 against the Giants and 3 against Tampa.

I would be surprised if Jeter comes back ever. Severe ankle injuries at his age are a bitch.

He’s certainly going to try. We’ll see how it goes.

Sad but not surprising.

This is why Pete Rose told Derek several years ago, “The first 3,000 hits are the EASY part.”

They’ve replaced him with Brendan Ryan. So they’ll get exactly the same offensive output as Jeter’s delivered this year, but from an actual defensive shortstop.

Yep, Ryan is a fantastic fielder.

I doubt he’d be willing to let it end this way. I’m confident he’ll play next year, possibly at DH or 1B, and if he can’t be effective then that’s it. I don’t see him hanging on just to be in the game somehow.

There have been rumors of the Yankees trying to talk Rivera into one more year, but I doubt he’d do it. He’d already be retired if not for that ACL tear last year, and he’s been pretty reachable lately. Some days as good as he ever was, but an increasing number where he just can’t do it anymore - that’s what happens to an athlete reaching the end of the line.

As a Red Sox fan I don’t have much love for the Yankees, but it’s pretty hard not to like Jeter. He always played the game hard and fair, and seemed to be a nice person to boot. I understand the desire to not let it end like this, but I really think it would be best to end his career now with some unanswered questions about if he could still play at a high level rather than play next year and provide answers.

I don’t know what their lineup is going to look like. I assume they do expect to keep Cano and have a healthy Teixeira and are counting on Rodriguez being suspended, and with Ryan at short, that would suggest Jeter will be at DH most of the time.

Will Ryan really be their long term answer at short? The guy isn’t even hitting at the Mendoza line, for Pete’s sake. .191 the last time I checked. That is just awful…

I hate the Yankees, but other than Reggie Jackson (who was my favorite player who was NOT a Pirate) who happened to be on the Yankees for a short spell, Jeter is my favorite Yankee. He seems like A class guy, has his ego in check, and has kept out of trouble and scandal in New York, which is almost impossible to do.

I hope he comes back for another year. But he won’t be playing SS much. Like you said, DH or first base is in his future.

I’m thinking about next year but not beyond that. I don’t think they picked up Ryan just for the rest of this season and the playoffs, and they can’t be impressed with Nunez after this season.

I don’t think he’ll be playing the field very much. Maybe once every couple of weeks.

He’ll be ineligible to play in the playoffs for the Yankees.

There’s always a way.

Someone could get “hurt”

If A-Rod is suspended for 2014, why not start Jeter at third in spring training?

What Jeter has lost is more than just a step. If he can’t play an acceptable SS anymore, then he’s going to have problems at 3B, too. Or he may have enough pride to retire, rather than stick it out for one last year with a team that figures to go .500 at best. That’s what they figure to be, with a bare farm system and its stars of yesteryear finally all gone and Cano gone off to LA (Dodgers or Angels, they both can pay him).

If he wasn’t anywhere in the organization on Aug. 31, there’s no way he can be on a postseason roster, even by faking somwbody onto the DL (that trick would allow a minor-leaguer not on the 40-man, but not a September acquisition).

I doubt it, but we’ll see.

His arm isn’t good enough.
