What is the deal with this? I know it is in Asia somewhere. Did Russia (or the USSR) think they could establish a state similar to Isreal for thier own Jewish folk.
Anyone know the SD??

The Jewish Autonomous Oblast was established in 1934 as part of a plan to set up separate homelands for various ethnic minorities. European Jews were not particularly attracted to settle the swampy region on the Chinese border. As of 1979, only 5% of the population of the oblast was Jewish. No more than 2% of the Jewish population of the USSR ever lived there. The Amur River forms the southern boundary of the oblast, and the trans-Siberian railroad pass through it. Birobidzan is the largest town.
There’s another thread on the same topic, I’m suggesting that all posts be directed there.
That is, Jewish Autonomous Region in Russia
