Jian Ghomeshi, host of Q on CBC, fired.

Ed the sock made an awesome post about all this on Facebook.
(Once again, no idea how to link, sorry! Desktop can, ipad not so much! Sorry!)

I think the CBC could find itself in a world of trouble. As more comes out, it appears that this was something of an open secret, among women in media. They would warn each other. That’s pretty bad, if it proves true.

But now it seems, one university (Carleton) stopped it’s intern program because of “safety concerns”. And another (Western) refused to participate in the intern program because “they’d heard disturbing things”!

Open secret indeed. I can’t help wondering about all the people who supported him as ‘the talent’, on his show. Choosing to overlook his well known tyrannical behaviour in the workplace. Maybe they managed to convince themselves he was just difficult. But he was known to reduce women to tears in the workplace.

That’s a lot of people playing along. They may not have been aware of the kink. I’m pretty confident not. But I can’t help wondering how they feel about that had behaviour now, and the role they played in supporting it?

I guess that all I’d heard about Jian Ghomeshi’s behaviour before this whole story officially broke, was that he’d had bad luck with women, and I read one rumour on a social media site that he had “wandering hands.” I guess I didn’t think much about these kinds of things at the time.

Did you listen to yesterday’s Canadaland podcast? The hand signals around Much Music was making a choking gesture with the hands. We all knew about Jian

And today… although I am not going to condemn anyone for soemthing they said after a show 18 years ago, it does come off as arrogant. And unfortunate to be surfacing right now. “All my fans make me sick” :frowning:

Has anyone had a faster downward trajectory than Ghomeshi?

It has been swift indeed.

An opinion piece, pretty damning of the CBC’s inaction: CBC management ignored warnings in Jian Ghomeshi affair: Editorial

And thanks to the poster in this thread who suggested using private browser mode to get around the paywall.

A nosedived career coming just after his father’s death two weeks ago and with the threats of criminal charges and civil suits to come, I wouldn’t be surprised if whatever friends he has left have him on suicide watch.

Sorry to be posting in this thread again, but I just found this cover/parody of “King of Spain” and had to share.

Jimmy Saville, although the fucker was dead when most of the stories came out.

In Canada, I’d say Russell Williams is in the running. He went from being a wing commander running our primary Air Force base to being an admitted multiple rapist and murderer in a few hours.

Indeed, I’m not sure if there has ever been a more highly placed rapist/murderer in our history.

Agreed. I just googled Jian Ghomeshi sociopath. He has had a number of interviews dealing with this topic. Ok in many years maybe it would be covered more than once, but I wonder if anything he heard rang any bells with him.

Still trying to figure out what I am doing with my first edition copy of 1982. I collect Canadian first editions in hard cover. This time last week I was still keeping an open mind about him, but as the week has gone on, I just feel dirty having it in my house.

I have a first-edition autographed copy of 1982, a poster, and a few CDs with Ghomeshi on them. I don’t really know what to do. Thinking of hiding them away in a drawer and trying to forget about them.

Yeah, I tried to keep an open mind about him at first, but that has changed. In order to give someone the benefit of the doubt, you have to actually have doubt.

[Complete and utter hijack because this is THE one and only time I will ever be able to bookbrag in this particular way ;)]

I have a full set of Robertson Davies’ three Trilogies - Salterton, Deptford and Cornish - all in First Canadian, a few signed. Love his stuff.

Carry on.

I am constantly dealing with cases in which spousal abuse (ranging from emotional abuse to physical abuse to rape to attempted murder) is alleged. Sometimes it is pretty obvious through the evidence that there was such abuse. Sometimes it is pretty obvious through the evidence that there was no abuse. Usually it is very difficult to tell one way or the other. On a broad-brush basis, however, there are some things that often indicate whether or not the allegation is true – do the allegation or denials pass the sniff test. For example, when fighting over child and spousal support, I’ve found that a party girl on social assistance who has addiction problems is quite likely to lie, and a mentally ill person who finds herself compulsively driven to be vindictive to the point of obsession is quite likely to exaggerate and create conspiracies. In the Ghomeshi matter, none of the complainants to date show red flags such as these. A lawyer, an Army captain, a journalist . . . and quite a few others; there is no way that all of them are all making it up.

When I first read Ghomeshi’s public letter, it rang true, for I see that sort of “crazy stalking girlfriend” behaviour all the time through my job. But when other victims spoke out, it became apparent that, through his public letter and his libel-proof claim, Ghomeshi had been trying to cover his tracks and put a spin on the matter that would raise public support for him and dissuade his victims from going pubic. Yes, some people make false accusations, but what is even more common is for people who have committed serious crimes to lie. The number and the credibility of the accusers swayed my opinion, and as more victims have spoken out, the more I believe that the opinion is correct.

Maybe you could organize some sort of symbolic book / CD / whatever burning. For every item tossed on the fire, money raised for the event could go to benefit a women’s shelter.

Cool. That makes me drool. Actually I have found some very nice firsts in Salvation Army. My collection is not particularly valuable or extensive but it’s my collection. Better than unicorn nicnacs.

Oddly, my copy of 1982 was on the shelf directly above The Mom Shiftby Reva Seth! I moved 1982 out of my front room bookshelf. And far far away from all women authors. It is currently sitting in the back foyer with some old manuals and reference books that I never use but have or will not donate.

Former Toronto area university student alleges he was groped by Ghomeshi

This information is in The Star too.

Eh, I’ll keep listening and grooving to Moxy Fruvous. I still dig it when Beat It or Billie Jean comes on the radio and well, you know…

I’ll bet they’re going to reveal the bastard had an interest in Chick Fil A as well.
