Amazon just sent me a notice saying that the latest Harry Dresden is out! Hooray!
Just placed my pre-order, so hopefully I will get the same email when I get home!
I’m third in line at the library…hope they got at least three copies!
Sooo looking forward to reading it.
In other Dresden news, the preorders for the Dresden Files RPG books went out this weekend. The books won’t be ready to ship until June or July, but preordering gives you a free PDF copy of the 99% complete book. It’s $90 for the two books, but they’re not planning any splatbooks so it’s overall cheaper than, say, D&D, and they definitely don’t skimp on the content. Even ignoring the RPG rules, there’s enough content to serve as fantastic sourcebooks for the setting. As a bonus, Billy, Harry, and Bob are all commenting on the book in the margins, and there’s almost enough commentary to fill a novel by itself.
Butcher’s doing a book signing in Houston Tuesday night, I’m waiting until then.
I doubt I’ll sleep much Tuesday.
Looks like Penguin screwed us and is delaying the release of the Kindle edition for who knows how long.
I just ordered a copy on amazon. No way I could beat the $9.99 price for the new hardcover!
You can read the first four chapters here.
Thanks for the heads up! I’ve already downloaded it now and will start reading it before bed.
It’s just my luck the book came out in the same week I start my new job…
I love this guy’s work so much, I’m even reading his Codex Alera series, and I don’t generally read that sort of book. I love his sense of humor, and his delivery, although neither Dresden or the Codex books are about the humor. I appreciate how his books reward continued reading. After the first Dresden book, I thought, “That was pretty good.” After the second, I thought, “It gets better.” By the third, I was recommending them to all my friends, and when I ran out of Dresden books, I started on the Codex series. Evolving situations and character growth make his books an engrossing read, with the earlier novels used as a base to build upon. I’m still waiting to see what he does with the sword that was entrusted to him how many novels back.
Butcher does great work, and I always eagerly await the next installment.
I’ve been telling folks the same thing. If he had stayed at the writing level of the first Dresden book I probably would have read them, probably buying used paperbacks. But he quickly grew as a writer; he’s one of the few folks I’ll buy in hardback and stay up all night reading.
I loved the Codex. It is different from Dresden, but very enjoyable.
Thanks! Just ordered it from the library!
Speaking of “Changes”, this is the first one-word title.
Mine’s on the way, too. What’s with the $9.99 hardback price on Amazon, anyway?
I’m probably going to let my son read it first. He was up late last night trying to finish a book required for school, because I won’t let him start the new Dresden until he’s done with that one.
Too funny! Good for him and good for you!
I finished it!
I’ve read it already and it’s great fun. I’ve liked each book in the series more than the one that came before and this one was no exception.
Spoilers for everything in the novel follow. Don’t open this until you’ve read it through:
Very apt title for the novel. Almost nothing will be the same after this one. No more Blue Beetle, no more old apartment, no more office, no more Red Court, so no more war, no more Susan nor Order of Saint Giles. Harry has a little girl, Ebenezar is Harry’s grandfather, Harry is the new Winter Knight, Murphy is no longer a cop and may take up a sword and Dresden dies at the end! (okay, I know he’ll be back for the next novel, but still…)
I can’t believe it’ll be an year until we find out what happens next. I don’t think any of the other novels end in cliffhangers. How’s Harry going to escape being the Winter Knight? How will he survive? What about Mouse? And the White Council? Everything feels open now and Butcher can take the series in any direction he chooses. It really seems like the whole tone of the novels is about to change drastically.
I missed Michael a lot in this novel and kept waiting for a conversation between him and Harry about fatherhood. Billy and the Alphas were also conspicuous for their absence and it seemed like Butters just disappeared after his cameo. There’s so much background and such a huge cast that Butcher is really struggling to keep them all in. That weird island isn’t even mentioned once.
I loved that Harry finally has something that he can actually feel guilty about - to me one of the most frustrating elements in the previous installments was the constants recriminations to which Harry subjected himself needlessly. Now, if only Butcher could take a little more time in his writing and improve the quality of his prose and of humor he’d be golden.
I’m trying to figure out if I have read Turncoat or not. :smack:
Spoilers welcome.
Aaaugh! My library is usually real skorry about receiving the new stuff and getting it into our hot little hands, but they don’t have it in yet. Dammit, what do I pay taxes for?
Welp…no spoilers <cause I haven’t read even what’s online> but the verdict isn’t good; my sweetie got the book last night, finished reading it 60 seconds ago, and 50 seconds ago threw the book against the wall.
He’s not happy.
I don’t want to read it now
It is one hell of a book if you’ve let yourself get invested at all in the Dresden story, and if you’ve gotten to book 12, you have. It’s…painful, but awesome.
Edit: I should add, the verdict is very good. It’s no less quality than any of the previous books. But it’s painful.
