Has anybody else gotten the Ben Stein Christmas Confessionsemail this year? The first paragraphs actually are written by Ben Stein but when it got into the crap about Bill Graham’s daughter and Madeleine Murray O’Hare* I knew before even snopesing** it that Ben Stein, while I don’t like him and think he’s a whining dipwad, is way too smart to write this appendage (not to mention thatDr. Spock’s son did not kill himself***- that one’s been around at least since I was in high school).
*Why her so damned particular in all these emails? She’s been dead for years and was basically just an ornery old bitch for decades before that; there’s plenty of more powerful atheists.
**Do most people just not know about snopes or just not care? Pretty much everybody I know on first name basis is familiar with it.
***He had a grandson who committed suicide, but the grandson was a diagnosed schizophrenic, which regardless of the merits or lack of with Spock’s books has nothing to do with rearing.
I’m sure #23 is historically accurate, but it sure is Nazi-ish. Not that the Nazi’s invented the swastika…
We have a Christmas Parade where I live. Technically, it’s a Holiday Parade, but I don’t know anyone who calls it that. My Jewish friends call it the Christmas Parade, My Hindi friends call it that. I’m sure there are a few offenderati who insist on calling it the Holiday Parade, but there are a tiny minority. Fact is, Christmas is the sine qua non for the parade.
I don’t think there are any religious floats, although I’m sure the Catholic schools have their marching bands and stuff. Most of the floats are commercial in nature, and they may pay lip service to the secular aspects of Christmas, but basically it’s a day for the kids to have fun and for the adults to drink.
I think this post is a prime example of people remembering or seeing special Christian persecution where it doesn’t exist. Why? Because the title of the thread was:
See, I’m an agnostic (probably leaning more towards atheism these days) who was raised in a Jewish/Christian non-observant household. To me there are two Christmases: the secular Christmas with its shopping, trees, lights, shopping, red + green decor, Santa Claus and his elves + reindeer, retail sales, candy canes and feasting, wish lists, Christmas movies and songs, and The Nutcracker; then there is the religious Christmas with its angels + trumpets, nativity scenes, Christmas Mass, butt-hurt Christians (some, thankfully, not all), church plays with kids playing Mary + Joseph (I played Mary one year at my aunt’s Baptist church), and glurgy songs.
I’m pretty sure that 99% of the time I hear the word Christmas, I’m thinking of the secular one. 99.998% of the time I say it, I’m talking about the secular one. That being said, I like Christmas and I wish people would stop making it such a big fuss over it. Really, where’s your holiday spirit?
I started looking for the Muslim one (#98) and come to find it “Not shown because of copyrights.” Those crafty Muslims, I bet images of Muhammad are copyrighted, too!
#32 was modeled after Yuri Gagarin in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
The Daily Show had a couple of funny bits about this last night.
I especially loved the Rankin-Bass style take on the “War on Christmas” with the characters voiced by the Daily Show staff.
We can. We do. Christianity gets more press here because it represents the majority faith in the countries most of us live in, not because it’s inherently special or any less ignorant that other faiths or any more or less desereving of dismissal.
Was this the same episode with the clips of the organizer of the Tulsa parade on FOX News with Blonde Gretchen Whatserface? The poor guy sat there like a deer in the headlights while Blondie bullied and berated him.
And it would have been so easy to put the bitch in her place, too: “It’s called a ‘Holiday Parade,’ Gretchen, because the citizens of Tulsa celebrate more than one holiday in December. Christmas is a big part of the parade, and we invite everybody who wants to celebrate Christmas to come and do so with us. But if you can’t bear the thought of sharing a parade with Jews or Africans or Muslims and decide not to show up, I won’t lose any sleep over it.”
Well, good, then.
The only FOX News I ever watch is in the form of *Daily Show *clips. I’d have expected Stewart would have been happy to show that part.
I celebrate Christmas and the birthing of Jesus Christ. When my high school banned our Christmas pageant there was a lot of outrage from the parents in the town. Silent Night could not be sung in the pageant as well as other songs that had ANY religious context. Why? The Dopers here have admitted that 80% of the American populace are Christians. Why fuck with it? Because Christians are happy with their ideals in America? Believe it or not, it’s not all about Santa and stockings by the fire. The celebration day itself may be/is fucked up, but the argument thrown down seems to be the same: “DON’T CALL IT CHRISTMAS”.. call it a HOLIDAY. No, I’m going to call it Christmas and everyone can feel free to celebrate as they want. I’m getting a warm a fuzzy feeling about the freedom of religion thing.
You don’t like that there might be a Christmas Parade?
Start your own parade. I will be a participant. I will celebrate it. The Darwin parade that someone mentioned upthread sounds magnificent.
