Jimi Hendrix: Hey Joe

Explain this lyric to me - just before the guitar solo, Hendrix sings

‘And I gave her the gun
And I shot her!’

Whats up with that? Undoubtedly someone’s noticed this before, but has it ever been explained?

Thanks in advance.

well, he shot his girlfriend…the two lines mean the same thing and is just a poetic device…rephrasing/emphasizing what he did. BTW, if you want a really cool version of hey joe, check out the one by the leaves. It predates Jimi’s version, but I like it better.

“I gave her/him the gun” is another way of declaring that you’ve shot somebody. I believe the actual lyric would be:

“And I gave her the gun –
I shot her!”

So as to emphasise the act by stating it twice.

Okay, thanks. Kind of dissapointing though, I was expecting something more deep and meaningful.

I kinda like Weird Al’s “Polkas On 45” version on his In 3D album.
