JJ Abrams' NCC-1701

I didn’t recognize Eomer as Dr. McCoy at first.

I like the look of this Enterprise.

That name has been driving me nuts. The commander of the “Star Cruiser” in Forbidden Planet is named J.J. Adams.

Poor naive rhymer…

The thing that I always liked about the original series Enterprise was its total lack of aerodynamic styling. It supposed to be in space after all, so why have it be all windswept-looking, when it will function just as well if it has its bits stuck out every which way.

That said, in STTNG Troi did take it into th’ atmosphere. And the dirt, as I recall.

Troi took it in the dirt?! There’s a really filthy joke in there someplace!

Didn’t the very first preview show the Enterprise being built on ground, though? It would seem it would have to be aerodynamic enough to get it into orbit, then.

Why? They have tractor beams capable of towing large objects without ripping them apart.

Insane rage, cartoonish revenge involving, oh, parakeets I guess, blah blah blah.

Here’s all of them. I always like D best myself, this new movie one is fine by me.

That’s not quite all of them. The Enterprise from Treks I, II, & III is not identical to the one from the series.

Well that’s nice. Thanks for the happy thoughts.

So much for Cafe Society being a fun place to discuss the show.

It doesn’t *look *identical, but it is the same ship. They already have a Constitution refit right there next to it, so I think it gets the point across.

I’m less agitated about the shape of the ship than the prospect of Romulans turning up in the early part of Kirk’s career when in the TOS episode Balance Of Terror they hadn’t been seen for ~100 years. :dubious:

It’s a reboot though isn’t it, so shouldn’t we just forget the continuity from TOS, TNG etc?

Meh — it’s the Enterprise. It’s got a saucer, a thingy, some other thingies on it… it’s the Enterprise.

I completely understand why they’re redoing the old ones: the previous television technology was based on film of miniatures broadcast over low-fidelity TV signals. The new technology requires CGI recorded on high-definition digital. A flat, featureless, utilitarian Enterprise like the first one would be … well, flat and featureless. You could get away with it on 1960s broadcast TV; not today.

Mind you, it’ll be slightly harder to make a fun toy using paper plates and toilet-paper tubes.

This is why I’m going to skip it completely. It’s one thing to reboot something like Battlestar Galactica. It’s a whole different story to reboot such a large part of people’s cultural background. I’ll stick to the original vision, thank you.

Gasp!

?

(Clutches chest) Mrs. Plant put you up to this, didn’t she?

I saw the Trailer before Quantum of Solace yesterday. It got my blood pumping. It felt NEW, and EXCITING, and FAMILIAR.

It’s one thing to look at a static picture and nitpick it to death, it’s another to watch it on a big screen with music and surround sound. I WANT to see this movie.

Upon further reflection, it had some hackneyed things that don’t stand up to scrutiny (which I won’t get into), but WTH, what movie ever does? (especially Sci-Fi)
