It will be out in print in Nov. but for now she is putting out parts on this website.
Interesting, thank you!
I read the first Chapter. I can’t say I liked it.
I’m gonna read it to the Grandwrex and see what they think.
Clearly fantasy with a “for the kids” feel. Meh…
BUT… I’ll give her a lot of benefit of the doubt now that she’s written my favorite private investigator series*.
*Cormoran Strike series, first book The Cuckoo’s Calling. The audiobooks are very satisfying.
Love the whole series. They’re long books, but compellingly readable.
On edit: I finally got round the reading the first two books of Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller series (when is book three coming out???), and the whole time I’m thinking “This is what the Harry Potter books wanted to be.”
There is a fall release date for the 5th Cormorant Strike book. I haven’t looked at the current serial, but assume it’s part of the trend toward kid entertainment during COVID.
Book 3 is never coming out. Ever. If you live with that expectation, the worst case is book 3 still doesn’t come out and you knew that.
That exact wording works for the Christopher Snow books, too (by Dean Koontz, who’s spent decades claiming the third book’s on the way as soon as he’s done with [current project])
I always say, if the author doesn’t want to finish it, or the Muses are seeking a divorce, we are better off without it than with second-rate work.
I have never begun this series because of this problem.
Anyone still reading The Ickabog? I’ve been following along every day, and will finish, but jeez. It’s not really “sparking joy” in “these uncertain times.”
Yes, it’s more like contemporary historical fiction. I assume at least some of the governmental stooges will get their comeuppance, which I suppose it what makes this a fantasy.
Ummm, those are not kids’ books. It’s gritty private investigator stuff (written under the name Robert Galbraith). I love the series, and the audiobooks are excellently read, but it’s very adult; full of cheating boyfriends and drug addicts and a psychologically and physically damaged protagonist … oh, and grisly deaths.
Damn, forget my To Be Read pile… I’m going to go back and reread these!
“The current serial” = Ickabog, the subject of this thread. “It’s” = Ickabog. Sorry if I was unclear.
Oh, gotcha. No, it was my reading acumen that was unclear.
Language. Bah.
So, just read the final installment of The Ickabog. This will be my first attempt at spoiler tags; they still work the same way, right?
I must admit I didn’t dig this story very much. There were too many characters, and I wasn’t very interested in any of them. I liked the fairy-tale aspect of each city that had its own specialty item, which of course was the best in the whole world. I also liked the Ickabogs and their …biology, for lack of a better word. The resolution with King Fred and the second-born was a nice fit.
I also have to say, Rowling’s recent behavior detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
Did that spoiler tag not work? It looked fuzzy in the preview, but apparently didn’t post that way.
nope. didn’t work. You might need the starting and ending tags to be on their own lines

here’s your text

Thank you, much appreciated.
I can’t find the new board instructions when I need them!
