JLA #15: A Disturbing Trend

The story was meh; okay dialogue over a shopworn plot. The thing that really bothered me was the art.

There was not one single background detail in any panel of this comic. Did it take place indoors or out? In a warehouse or a fog bank? Did the Superman/Luthor throwdown happen in space or on the ground? Don’t know. The artist, Ed Benes, is okay at drawing figures, but not much else. Aren’t editors supposed to keep this kind of crap from happening?

I don’t want to single out DC for this; a fairly recent issue of Thunderbolts (I think it was #50) had the same problem. But if an artist can’t draw a building, a car, a dog, horse, gun, skyline or business suit with any competence, he really shouldn’t be given a Marvel or DC title to draw, and if DC can’t find enough competent artists for all their titles, they should cut back on output. This is pretty inexcusable.

I missed starting my comic book thread, didn’t I? I didn’t get my books till Saturday, because of bad weather… oops.
