When we last left our Joan, she was in the hospital being treated for Lyme disease. One of the symptoms of Lyme disease is auditory and visual hallucinations.
In this episode, God tries to reconnect with Joan, but she is having nothing to do with that.
So, did Joan hallucinate God? Will her personality change so Adam doesn’t know her anymore? What is up with her darker hair color as seen in the promos? What will happen with Luke and Grace post-kiss? And how long into the the show will it be before some says, “Shut it, Friedman?”
Tune in tonight at 8pm Eastern on your local CBS affiliate!
I can’t wait. This was one of my favorite shows last year, and I’m glad it’s back.
FWIW, I think all the “Gods” she saw in the series finale last year were hallucinations except the final one (Cute Teenage Boy God) who was sort of keeping watch over her in the hospital. He was the only one who didn’t talk to her while she was sick.
And right after Joan is Third Watch. Another good TV night.
Okay, make that three.
How can they write so well? Why can’t others do that? A TV show shouldn’t be able to affect me that way. IT’S JUST TV!
I’m not usually this emotional guys. These people have found a way to finally reach me. I am hooked on this show like it was a lover.
Bad hair, bad attitude, looks like she’s put on weight, but that’s probably just her new real bad taste in clothes. I presume that, once she gets over her snit with the Big Guy, she’ll revert.
Liked how Joan still isn’t quite sure which way Grace swings (“If there’s a guy you’re in love with… or not a guy… I should know about it.”) Liked that Joan is still working at the bookstore. Liked the fact that Little Girl God’s ball was a globe. Won’t go into any more detail without a spoiler box.
It was powerful, but I didn’t like it. I guess, to be more accurate, I didn’t like how it made me feel. It was too much going on, too soon. It’s beginning to seem as if God is petulant and vindictive, the very thing that the priest told Joan’s mom he couldn’t bring himself to believe in.
Aes, I will be sending tapes aplenty, since Joan and ENT are on the same night and time and soon I’ll have to use both VCRs. I just hope the old one doesn’t die…
Wow, this was a heavy one. As Bela Lugosi said in Ed Wood, “Now that’s what I call a premiere!”
NinjaChick:
Joan spent the summer at Gentle Acres making lamps and receiving therapy. (Seriously.) God appeared to her at least twice in this ep. but she didn’t really engage It until the end.
Grace and Luke are getting it on but don’t want anyone to know.
The Friedman is still…The Friedman.
Will had to tell Helen that the drunken guy who drove the car and paralyzed their son is suing the Girardis for “emotional damages.”
Luke tried to rig up some gear for Kevin to help him play golf with his dad, but when he started slipping, Will got very upset due to the previously mentioned lawsuit and the memories it brought back about the accident.
Helen met with a priest and a nun to try to get back into the Catholic Church.
The bookstore manager’s wife is extremely troubled and had been talking to her pet rabbit. When she thought he was complaining too much about it, she showed up at the bookstore with her rabbit–which she had killed.
That’s off the top of my head.
ivylass, do you have shelter from all those FL storms?
I hadn’t really forgotten how much I love this show–nor how much I missed it during the summer months! The cast and storylines weave together near-seamlessly… (oh oh… I think I may be asking for a Viva smackdown with that grammar there! :P).
-Adam believes Jane now, as opposed to the season finale back in May–only Jane doesn’t want him to believe her. Gah, but very touching
-still haven’t figured out why G-D seemed to have left Joan hanging or even abandoned her when she was diagnosed with the Lyme disease. Except … perhaps her lyme-disease-induced hallucinations didn’t really start until she was hospitalized, and made her feel that way, if that makes any sense.
-Grace & Luke - heh, what a couple! He’s like totally in her thrall and she knows it, yet at the same time Grace isn’t really acknowledging that she has strong feelings for Luke. Should be quite entertaining to watch their relationship develop further.
-Helen and her return to the Church - thank you, Parking Lot Priest (LOL) for hitting the nail right on the head there.
So much going on … I know I’m forgetting things!!! JM’s storyline is turning him in the opposing direction from his wife–it’s good to see them all dealing with their beliefs, though.
Thank you so much, CBS & Barbara Hall for bringing us some of the best drama on TV in a -long- time.
Agreed. Fantastic season premiere. The show hasn’t slipped even a notch; in fact, if anything, it is better than ever. Wonderful throwaway tidbits, like the scene with Helen and the priest in the cafe, when he made a West Wing reference, and immediately the camera did a West Wing style cut and pan.
Great stuff. And to top it all off for me, it mostly matches my own theology.
Also loved the Cuckoo’s Nest reference — guy who acts like he’s crazy to escape from prison. Oh, the power of metaphor! Then God shows Joan what crazy really is. It so shows up in the details when writers love the show they’re doing.
Yes. Getting damn sick and tired of the hurricanes, thank you very much.
Did Mrs. Bookstore kill the rabbit, or did it just die? I wasn’t clear on that.
Nice to see Mrs. LandingGod (Am I invisible? Does anyone see me?) and the back of Goth God.
I laughed out loud at the “You stole that!” “Technically, everything’s mine,” line, so I didn’t catch the name of the play.
Kevin is right. Luke needs to stand up to Grace and tell her to straighten up. Five minutes of necking every morning does not a relationship make.
The scene of Kevin bravely strapped to the golf cart and trying to swing, while he and Luke are laughing and Will and Helen are trying not to cry was so touching. And when Helen completely lost it when Will told her about the lawsuit…Mary Steenbergen is such a wonderful actor. I hope the judge throws the suit out and slaps Andrew about the head and shoulders.
I also caught the West Wing reference.
Joan telling God she doesn’t want him in her life, I think, may have looked like to passersby that it was a girl breaking up with her boyfriend. I don’t think God has given up on Joan, but in next week’s show, it looks like we see a bit of God’s wrath, as it is implied something bad happens to Adam
Oh, let’s see. For you? Seventh Heaven, Everwood, Little House on the Prairie from some crappy UHF stations with lousy reception, the occasional telethon, the 700 Club, and every makeover show I can find.
What I am actually taping to fill up tapes between eps of ENT and Joan–and bear in mind that these will vary:
Malcolm, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, Two and a Half Men, Lost, Joey, ER, JAG.
