Most of our jobs tie us down to a certain place and time, and most of them are fairly brain-dead and involve only a couple weeks of training. Couldn’t we have a job exchange program, so you could swap jobs with someone else, even the same job classification but in a different geographic location?
I doubt there would be enough people willing to move on a regular enough basis to make this feasible, at a time when many companies seem to be working MUCH harder to improve the bottom line than to improve employee satisfaction.
Also, job longevity is usually linked to job commitment… the more it looks like you’re setting down roots and planning on being there for the long term, the more solid you are. If your boss knows you’re looking to move to another town, even if you’re going to be doing the same job somewhere else for the same company, if the order comes down that he has to lay off 10% of his staff, you’re done.
I haven’t had a job since high school that was brain-dead and required no training.
