Employers at anything infotech oriented know very well that most of their people take the pragmatic approach, learning and using only what they need to get the job done. In tough times, unfortunately, pragmatic people are in great oversupply. It makes more sense to hire an übergeek who can be relied upon to solve the zillion niggling little tech issues the rest of us get into. It cuts both ways.
Broomstick, I’m in the same boat as you and it really truly sucks. I billed 68 hours last year. So far I don’t have even a glimmer of a possible contract this year. And it sure didn’t help that I moved far away from all my professional contacts right as the recession started.
