Isn’t it looking like Roy Moore might win the GOP nomination again? That could be just the miracle we need.
someone should track how many times Biden moves to the left when changing his positions. He already did it once on the Hyde amendment. That won’t be the last one.
And so? He explained why, a perfectly reasonable explanation. Did you read it? And why does it matter?
Did he say “I am changing my position to get more votes in the primary?” Because we know that’s the real reason he changed his mind.
21 Dem candidates answered the same 18 questions from the NY Times. Biden did not.
Too busy I guess.
Nope. So you’re just ragging on him, even tho you dont even know* why *he changed.
He changed because he supported the Hyde amendment in the spirit of compromise. After Alabama and other states passed those ridiculous anti-abortion laws, he said there’s no more room or need to compromise with them.
Except the actual timeline doesn’t support that narrative at all. Alabama passed its abortion law on May 15th. Mississippi passed its ban on the 21st. Almost all the new abortion laws were passed in May. Biden still supported the Hyde amendment in early June, until he started getting raked over the coals on it by other candidates, at which point he executed a hairpin turn on the subject.
It was 100% a political calculation.
Anyway, even if you take Biden’s story at face value, the fact that it took him until June of 2019 to figure out that the Republicans aren’t interested in compromise on abortion is still not a great look.
Who cares if Biden changes his mind to get votes – that’s actually a reason to vote for him and not against him.
Republicans who voted for Ted Cruz and other Republicans in the 2016 primary feared Trump wasn’t a real Republican, and given his past comments it’s easy to see why. But he’s voted hardcore radical Republican since being in office. I don’t care if Biden shifts his positions. If it means he can get key legislation passed, all the more power to him. I’d rather have a shifty pol get something passed that matters than someone who consistently falls on his own sword.
The problems the Dems had with Hillary will be magnified if Biden is the nominee as much of the same complaints about her (old, entitled, out of touch) apply to Joe… but, worse, unlike Hillary, Biden has little credibility in the minority community.
What are you talking about? He has a ton of support from African-Americans. That’s actually a strength of his. Members of the CBC are even defending him today after other candidates started attacking him over working with segregationist senators in the 70s.
I think Biden’s pretty solid in the minority community. Of the potential weaknesses that you mentioned, there’s only one that I agree with and believe it would be lethal if it emerges as a campaign issue, and that’s his age. If he has a few debate appearances in which he delivers sloppy responses or appears confused and forgetful, or even just plain tired and lacking in stamina, that could be a real problem.
Yeah, that’s pretty ridiculous. Biden has his problems, no doubt, but he is an entirely different politician from Hillary and entirely different baggage.
I’d also add that it remains to be seen what kind of campaign Biden’s team runs. One thing that’s clear already is that Elizabeth Warren knows how to campaign. When she says she’s got a plan for that, she ain’t bullshittin’. She’s got a plan for whippin Joe Biden’s ass. It’s just a matter of how Biden can hold up as the race goes through different stages.
Hmmm… I was all for Biden/Buttgeig but Biden/Warren may be best now. I’m sure Buttigeig will get a cabinet position anyway.
I am concerned over his health also, altho now he appears quite vibrant and healthy.
If Biden can hold up, my preferred ticket would be Joe Biden/Kamala Harris. I think Joe Biden/Elizabeth Warren might work, but I think an inverted Obama-Biden ticket would get people’s asses to the polls. Of course a lot of that depends on how Harris can project her image in this race. I think Harris is really running to be Biden’s Veep at this point (assuming he wins).
If Warren shocks the world and stuns Biden, I’m not sure who balances out her ticket. I would have said Cory Booker but he’s already staked out some pretty hard left positions and she’d need someone from the center left. Maybe someone like a Hickenlooper or Tim Ryan? I think that’s one of the concerns I have with Warren. I am warming up to the idea of her as a presidential candidate, but who balances out her ticket? Who does that and brings out the minority vote? And I guess I honestly don’t like how I phrased it, so I’ll try again: who helps Warren bring out a broad cross-section of the country?
Amazingly more often than not the VP on the ticket is not someone who also ran in the primaries.
True, but more often than not, we don’t have 24 candidates running in the primaries.
Yeas and yet there are still many more politicians who are not. The VP nominee certainly could be one of them, and some might be decent picks, but the way people talk here the only considerations are others running for the top of ticket.
The last page or so of posts is a great illustration of why we need likes.
Yes, this is correct.
This is also correct.
This too is correct.
Also correct.
Yes, agreed.
I’m honestly at a loss to understand this mass delusion among Democrats that Warren would be a good nominee (I see it not just online but at my local DFL meetings as well). Do I need to remind you guys about her incredibly weak numbers in Massachusetts? Plus, just look at her, listen to her talk. This is serious business–we need to beat Trump, not get lured into rewarding the candidate who best loads up the Christmas tree!
