Joe Flaherty has died at the age of 82

R.I.P., Guy Caballero.

Count Floyd is gone.

He was really a huge piece of my childhood…like one of the actors you just imprint on and you are going to love them no matter what they are in.
I even loved a terrible Canadian sci-fi horror movie he’s in with Andrea Martin. All my friends said it was so bad but for me- “Maybe… but Flaherty and Martin are so funny in it!”

That was my first thought too.

This is sad news. RIP Count Floyd.

You know what he’s doing now? He’s dead!

All of Melonville and the entire Tri-County area mourns.

It’s incredible that Joe Flaherty, Guy Caballero, Count Floyd, and Sammy Maudlin all died on the same day… And they were all the same age!

I’ve always been partial to Father John Duffy, the host of “Match Unto My Feet.” Here is his segment from Easter 1977:

Sammy Maudlin is still with us. You were probably thinking of Harold Weir.

Don’t forget Norman Gorman:

He blowed up real good.

Loved him on SCTV and other comedy projects. I was surprised to see that he was cast as the father in Freaks and Geeks but he did a great job of balancing caring father with clueless dad.

I knew him, sort of. He was a member of another site I was on, and one day he sent me a private message saying he was going to be in town for a show, and did I want to meet? Of course I did. So we went and watched him perform with the Die-Nasty improv troop, then got together afterwards and chatted for an hour or so. He was a super nice guy.

I first found the original SCTV in the 70s using a high antenna pointed towards The Great White North. Tiny B&W TV with a lot of snow.

Funny as can be.

I loved Count Floyd and Floyd Robertson, of course. But during my current run through his Sammy Maudlin is just amazing to watch. The knee-slapping thing (apparently based on Sammy Davis Jr.) is a great touch.

He also had a large trove of great impressions. His Mitchum is downright scary. Really underappreciated in this category.

He and Levy were the only cast members to be in the whole run of the show.

I had quite recently looked up his credits and noticed he hadn’t done anything in a few years. Knew that wasn’t good news.

Aw, man. Why am I constantly surprised at how old the entertainers I watched as a kid are. It’s not like I don’t know how old I am and they must be quite a bit older than that. RIP, John.

This is so cool! I don’t think I’ve met anyone as famous as him.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. Sad that he’s gone.

He’d apparently been pretty ill for a while. Earlier this year, Martin Short and other Second City alums organized a fundraiser to help pay for Flaherty’s medical and care expenses.

Can’t forget Ward Cleaver pouring whisky into his cornflakes:
