I’m sorry to see Miller go. I have fond memories of listening to him do Orioles games, but if he goes back to radio I probably won’t hear him. The reports are that ESPN’s new TV team could be Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser. So help me, I just can’t help being annoyed by the way Shulman pronounces words like second base as “secondabase.” On the other hand I guess he won’t be doing baskettaball anymore.
Miller sounds like he’s surprised at everything. He’s got that weird inflection where even, “There’s ball four, he takes first base” sounds like it’s never happened in any game before, ever.
And Joe sounds like he’s off the reservation half the time, and that there’s nothing that could stir excitement in him. Down three in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, two out, full count … Grand Slam! – Joe’s take, “Well, he was bound to get a strike so I’m not surprised he got good contact. Back when I was playing … yada yada yada …”
Personally, I think Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy should be contracted to call every baseball game ever played from here on out. Now there’s a broadcast team.
I have never loved anybody with the passion I hate Joe Morgan with.
I believe his contract dictated that he “annoy everyone with the stupid until they can’t take it anymore, and then be smug about your stupid observations for a while.”
Smug and stupid and short is no way to go through life, son.
My vote is for Don Sutton. I’ve had the great pleasure of listening him for years as a Braves announcer. Smoltz has had a great transition to the booth and I think his future is bright as a color commentator.
That’s not even bad by Joe’s standards. A few years back he explained tha the reason the Braves had beaten the Astros in the preceding playoff game (or it might have been the other way around) was that the Braves (or Astros) had scored more runs.
Well either way, Morgan is finally gone. Unfortunately, that also means the chances of the truly excellent www.FireJoeMorgan.com coming back have probably reached zero. Zero from nearly zero, but still.
Jon Miller is the voice of baseball for me for his work from ESPN. Then again, I grew up in Arizona without a baseball team, so ESPN was pretty much the only way to watch games. I’ve always loved his work.
I don’t know who I’d like to fill the pbp position, but I always liked Dave Campbell as an analyst. He used to do ESPN tv, and now does ESPN radio, so I’d love it if they brought him back. I doubt they will, though.
Hasta la vista, Joe. Please take Joe Buck and Tim McCarver with you on the way out.
I’d love to see Orsillo and Remy get a shot (although Remy’s appeal would probably be severely limited outside of New England). Kruk and Kuip would be fantastic too. Sadly, neither is likely to happen.
I’m hoping those guys come back for one last “we did it!” type of thing. Truly hilarious blog. The entry on superbike racing is pure gold.
That said, I’m sad about Jon Miller. I really like him. I know a lot of people don’t, but you gotta consider he was stuck with Joe Morgan. I liked Miller because he was not really afraid to call Morgan out from time to time. They didn’t have a great chemistry, I admit, but the point is…who *could *have a great chemistry with Joe Morgan?
