Joe Rogan and his massive audience

Neil Young pulled a Tom Petty?

I’m not making headway either. I feel… helpless

You’re not new here. Of course he is.

 does it hurt to be this wrong, or are you too stupid to realize it?

If there’s any justice in this world, this level of stupidity should hurt.

I just find it bizarre that anyone would think A) that Young didn’t know perfectly well that Spotify wouldn’t bend to his demand, and that he was from the start making a statement of principle and was prepared to follow through. I mean, this is Neil Young we’re talking about, right? He’s been writing protest songs and taking heat for it since before Joe Rogan was born. [Edit: Ohio was actually released when Rogan was 3, sorry.] And B) that Young would be concerned or alarmed about not being on Spotify or losing the revenue from it. I’m pretty sure he can make do without a bit of streaming revenue. Dude is worth several tens of millions at least (googling his net worth gets results ranging from $70m-$200M). Not to mention married to a movie star with significant wealth of her own. Speaking of which, wtf when did Neil Young and Daryl Hannah become a thing? I would have thought I would have heard about something like that.

I always thought Spotify was about music, not bloviating, but Barry Manilow has now joined Young and apparently Spotify won’t let people cancel anymore because they are being overwhelmed.

I also saw a claim on twitter that Spotify has removed 42 of Joe Rogan’s podcasts so far. I can’t vouch for that as fact though.

Anyway, I don’t think we’re heard the end yet.

I don’t know how much it matters, but Spotify stock is down about 5% today, 10% over the last 5, over 25% since the start of the year.

Seeing what Springsteen and Dylan sold their music rights for, I would guess Young is definitely at the high end of that estimate.

Indeed.

Well, that would be the deathblow for sure , but apparently, that’s an unsubstantiated rumor, and likely impossible.

Damn it, I’m sorry for spreading a false rumor.

Neil and Pegi divorced, then Neil got with Daryl (sp?) like right away. Then Pegi died. I was saddened by the way that went down, but then again what business is it of mine?

Your whole assertion is based on a false premise.

He probably realized that if he demanded a ‘him or me’ decision, he wasn’t going to be the winner. No way Spotify is dropping a $100 million investment because an old rocker doesn’t like it.

You said Young threatened Spotify to choose between himself and Rogan. He did not. He stated a fact. He was demanding that his content be pulled because of Rogan. And that is exactly what he did. Full stop. No negotiation.

Ans Spotify is complying. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/26/arts/music/spotify-neil-young-joe-rogan.html

Joe Rogan is plenty smart. Smart enough to be able to ask decent questions of physicists, biologists, or whoever he gets on his show.

It is possible that someone crafted the questions for Joe. Which would still be pretty smart.

And it’s not all that hard to come up with questions like, “And how does that work?” or “Could you explain that to me”, or “What does that mean?”

They are good questions for someone to ask, in order to get a guest to talk about them, but it doesn’t really take that much intelligence to do so.

He’s sold a piece of those rights, so he doesn’t own 100%. Still controls them, so probably greater that 50%?

I’ve been a Premium subscriber since their very early days and I had no problems cancelling today. I can’t delete my account yet, as I apparently have to wait a month for my subscription to switch to free before that becomes possible, but at least I stopped sending them money.

Joni Mitchell stands by Neil Young:

From Joni Mitchell’s page:>

I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue. —Joni Mitchell

Read An Open Letter to Spotify: A call from the global scientific and medical communities to implement a misinformation policy.

I approve of that stance.

Someone leaked Spotify’s incredibly lenient medical misinformation rules:

I think this might be going somewhere. If so, good on you, Neil Young, for starting something.

At first I thought this was a headline from The Onion:
