Well, I’ll be sure to send out a memo.
It’s nice that the next time Joe Scarborough demands that heads roll on account of an on-air slip up, one can always point him to this event.
To me it seems like yet more proof that puritanism is so ingrained that even being one of the “in crowd” will not save you if you trip up. If Scarborough is booted by the extreme right, aren’t they just going to use this as yet another example of how marvellously upstanding they all are? And if he rescues himself by acting pious and contrite for a bit, isn’t it just going to be proof of how tempting all this naughtiness is? After all, if pastors getting caught soliciting gay sex in public toilets doesn’t bring down the supposed moral majority, a casual fuck here or there is hardly going to rend the temple in twain, is it?
That’s right, motherfuckers, “in twain.”
That’s the beauty of it. Hardly a stink was raised, especially by his cohorts. And Joe himself wouldn’t even admit to saying it for quite some time. It’s much better that it happened that way, so that when the time comes, it can be said, “Well, you know how trivial such a slip up is, Joe.” Now, his constituents didn’t like it, for sure. But they’re kinda stuck. All they can do is rationalize that it’s somehow different for him than for someone else.
Yabbut… They’re awfully good at that already. From so much practice.
“That’s the beauty of it. They didn’t DO anything!”
Also, the notion can be applied that somehow THIS slip-up was different from those other, nastier ones. (Poor misunderstood Joe was only paraphrasing someone else, he said it early in the morning before the kiddies wake up, he was clueless not deliberate blablabla yadda yadda yadda…)
Liberal, for the record I was responding to Captain Amazing.
Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
Thanks for letting me know.
Look, I have no love for the guy and get the warm fuzzies if something makes him squirm but not over this. It could happen to someone I like someday. This just is not worth getting in a fuss about.
And I am amazed at the indignation from people sent because they had their virgin ears sullied by hearing the word “fuck”. If their kids are watching (and really…how many kids are going to be paying attention to this news show) then tough. If the kids are beyond the first grade they probably use the word themselves on the playground with frequency. If they are younger it will be meaningless to them and go in one ear and out the other.
The word is ubiquitous in our society and few people get bent out of shape over hearing it…particularly if it is not directed at them. Watch most any movie PG-13 or harsher and it is almost a foregone conclusion it’ll be dropped in there somewhere.
Personally I am totally with George Carlin on this:
