Can anyone identify the featured movies in the trailer, apart from Reptilicus?
Can’t wait! I am not able to identify any of the movies, but man does Crow’s voice sound good
Did that giant robot have breasts?
I really dug the trailer and I’m excited to see the new eps but I thought Felicia Day was a little too cute to play an evil mad scientist. I’ll still watch it and I’m sure I’ll enjoy her performance.
I like that list of names of people who are interested in and/or involved in the production of it. I’m glad that it has this kind of fanbase:
Felicia Day seemed awkward in the clip they used of her. Patton Oswalt? He’ll be perfect in this. I can’t wait.
Is Joel a head writer on it? Is Mike Nelson doing any writing on it at all?
To cute to be evil? You never met my ex-wife, obviously.
From an article on the trailer (spoiled in case people don’t want to know)
The Time Travelers (1964)
Starcrash (1978) - a low budget Star Wars ripoff, starring David Hasselhoff
I wonder if nowadays, they had to pay for the rights to these movies. A lot of crappy movies have their rights owned nowadays, don’t they? I’m amazed they were able to make this show!
Of course they do. But it’s not expensive to show crappy movies - a lot of local stations show crappy movies as filler all the time.
In “The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide”, TV’s Frank talks about how they wanted to do “Radar Secret Service” back in Season 2, but the cost was too high. By season 5, the show was better known plus the film distribution co. that owned the rights realized they weren’t going to get network primetime money for their movie, so they were able to do it.
“I’m different!”
Mike’s not involved in any way. Despite his high profile involvement in the original series, he never had an ownership stake in the MST brand. And the new series is, in many ways, a direct competitor with RiffTrax, which Mike does have a stake in, so working on the new MST would be undercutting his own business.
They always had to pay for rights, but rights for crappy movies that no one wants to watch can be be pretty cheap.
Is Joel going to host again with the puppet characters?
I know he’s bringing the show back and writing.
I don’t know the young guy with Crow in the preview.
I really liked the early years of MST. When it was a low budget show with puppets made from various found parts. I watched regularly for several seasons.
Nope, the new guy is Jonah Ray and he’s the current victim/subject of experiments.
I half-expect Joel to make a guest appearance somewhere. I know Mike is less likely, but they have to both be happy that the show is back and I almost expect even Mike to quickly pop-in at one point…or to be shown resting at home.
I’ll give the new show a chance. See if they can get the old magic working again.
Thanks Mahaloth.
Yes, I think they wanted to stick to the “younger guy” vibe from the old show and I really don’t think Joel was up for putting the suit back on and returning to the theater. His character escaped in a pod, anyway.
I just hope Jonah is as good as Mike and Joel. It’s a high-bar to reach.
In the trailer, the hazmat-suit guy who launches Reptilicus into the theater sounds a lot like Joel. Hidden cameo?
Episode 1: watched! Maybe it’s the giddy high from a 18-year drought being over, but damn, that was good. Not perfect – some of the riffs seemed rushed and/or forced, but for the most part it was brilliant.
Hopefully they work out pacing issues as the season goes on, because that was pretty much a thing of beauty.
