John Chaney/John Calipari incident

I saw part of this during ESPN’s list of “most memorable coach blowups” (or something). The '94 championship, IIRC. Chaney stormed into Calipari’s press conference and delivered an incredibly virulant, screaming tirade, ending with “I’ll kill you!”. Most of the people in the room had to restrain him.

Okay, I admit that I’ve never followed college sports all that closely. But every time I see or read about this incident, I have to ask, what the hell was that all about? It was far too serious to qualify as trash talking, and I’ve never heard of a sore loser taking it out on the opposing coach.

I’ve already searched several sites, but the best I’ve found is that Calipary “apprently said something that made Chaney snap”. Anyone else got the real dope?

I don’t think either man ever would say what the dispute exactly was about, but they seemed to patch up the problem pretty quickly after the argument.

Both Calipari and Cheney have pretty big egos and it’s not hard to imagine that they could tick each other off to a great extent during the heat of the action at a game.

And Chaney is known for getting very worked up about something, then forgetting it in two minutes.
