Did anyone see Jon Stewart interview Jonathan Edward on “The Daily Show” last night (Tues. the 4th)? I watch the reruns, so I’ll see it tonight at 7:00. I am hoping Stewart tore that shameless bastard a new one, but somehow doubt it . . .
Nope, sorry to disappoint. Stewart is friendly enough, and gives a lot of bogus, slow pitch questions. Although I did, at least, get the impression that Stewart would really rather have been interviewing someone else.
Damn. I wonder who the show’s booker is? I’ll bet Edward’s “people” made damn sure Stewart agreed to only pitch soft-ball questions.
I caught the show, and I was disappointed to see them having him as a guest. I got the impression that Jon thinks Edward is full of it, but played along for the most part. He also made a comment tonight about it. Something about how Edward told him during the commercial break that it was all a hoax (he was joking).
As a mini-hijack, I know Edward is a shameless money-grubbing charlatan, but seriously, how can a person just sit there and lie straight-faced like that? I am almost convinced that Edward (and others of his ilk) are sadly deluded into thinking that they really are doing what they claim to be doing. I don’t even know if that’s possible though, how thick do you have to be? I can’t wait for this guy to go the way of Uri Geller. (So the next bullshit artist can take his place.)
I had the same impression, Genseric—that Jon Stewart really wanted to cut loose, but Higher Powers (network, not heavenly) forbade it.
I think some of these “psychics” are self-deluded, but Edward (who really has a face made for bitch-slapping, by the way) is a total fraud. His methods are too cunning to be anything but a charlatan act.
I wonder sometimes. John Edward says that he gets flashes of of images–well, don’t random things pop into your mind sometimes? Then he embarks on his twenty-questions fishing game . . . could be that he discards his “misses” as easily as his audience does. Maybe he really thought he was on to something, at first. Then as he became more successful and more was at stake, maybe he thought he’d just get a little help, and branched into warm reading and hot reading . . . you know, just to get a little boost, to bring his “gifts” to a larger audience. . .
Or maybe he was a scam artist from the get-go. Hard to say which is more likely.
