John Fetterman really needs to resign

Aside from the merits of this particular issue, I object to Fetterman’s tone. You can say you think the slogan is unwise, unclear, not well thought through. When you’re calling members of your own party “inappropriate and outrageous”, what language to you have left over to describe Trump? Seems to me like he’s feeding into the narrative that “Progressive Democrats really do want open borders”.

Well, I predict it’s only a matter of time, then. They’re already breaking into people’s homes to abduct them and kidnap their children, and posting videos of themselves doing so on social media. They’re already completely disregarding the Constitutional rights of their victims, while thumbing their noses at repeated court order to stop doing so. They’re already dressing up like stormtroopers and wearing masks to protect themselves from any accountability. It’s not hard to see where this is going.

4 posts were merged into an existing topic: ICE is racist, fascist, lawless, and running concentration camps

But they didn’t specifically parade their rape victims around in a pickup truck, so it’s an entirely different thing.

…I’m not sure I understood this correctly. Are you saying that you think it’s “only a matter of time” until ICE agents in America start committing the sorts of attrocities we saw Hamas commit on October 7th?

Are you being hyperbolic or do you mean that literally?

I absolutely mean it literally. I think Trump wants to turn the agency into his personal Gestapo, and has already gone too far down that road for the agency to be reformable.

Note that I am not calling for the abolition of, say, the FBI or CIA, because I don’t think they have been captured by Trumpists to the same extent that ICE has.

Then that’s where we very obviously disagree about the facts, and our differing prescriptions are all downstream of that. I think what ICE is already doing is horrendous and disgusting, and of course illegal. That doesn’t mean that ICE is going to start mass murdering people.

Perfect demonstration of the problem with calling every single thing a genocide or a concentration camp. It flattens the severity of everything. When everything is a “concentration camp”, nothing is.

There is no world in which ICE is 90% as bad as Hamas. Hamas flat out murdered foreign workers who had nothing to do with the conflict for shits and giggles, without even the pretense of them being “Zionist Oppressors” since these are Thai farm workers, not “Zionists”. Comparing ICE to that is ridiculous.

Surely - surely - you must be able to recognize that the point of that comparison was not, “ICE is as bad as Hamas.”

And yet, when I drilled down on it, that’s pretty much exactly what both ThingFish and iiAndyiiii said:

You’re right, there could have been a point to the comparison other than “ICE is as bad as Hamas”, and if in reply to me asking if that was really what they meant they’d have told me that “no, of course not, Hamas is clearly many times worse, but that’s not the point I was making” I might have looked pretty silly. But, as I thought, that’s not what either ThingFish or Andy responded with. Because it seems pretty clear that they do think that ICE is as bad as Hamas, or at the very least, would like to act like Hamas does but can’t quite yet.

Eta: actually, in the interest of accurately representing what Andy said, he didn’t say that ICE is “as bad” as Hamas, he said they were 90% of the way there.

Moderating:

I’ve been watching the ongoing sidebar on ICE and ICE/Hamas for nearly an hour now, hoping we’d get back on track on our own, but 11 of the last 12 posts haven’t tied this to Fetterman at all. @Babale, @Thing.Fish, @iiandyiiii - I appreciate the passion, but this isn’t the right thread for it, so either take it a more appropriate thread, or please spin off a separate thread. I’ll even move some of these posts for you if you do so. But again, it’s not appropriate for this thread.

How to Reply as a linked Topic

Click Reply, in the upper left corner of the reply window is the reply type button, looks like a curving arrow point to the right.

Choose Reply as linked topic and it starts a new thread. As an example, you can choose GD, IMHO or The Pit for it.

That is actually the best method.

Followup: @iiandyiiii’s posts moved by their request to new thread. As it is a Pit thread, I have not moved the posts of the other participants, but will do so if asked. New thread:

This is just a guidance, not a warning. Nothing on your permanent record.

nm, saw mod note.

I’m going to be one of those people who agrees with you.

It’s only a matter of time, even if it’s during their off-hours.

p.s. Now, let’s resume our regularly scheduled programming.
