I am huge fan of John Lennon and the Beatles. I was recentlydoing some research on pseudoscience and I found this fundamentalist Christianpreacher who wrote this article in an obscure newsletter in 1981 after JohnLennon died calling The Beatles “sub-human demonistic creatures"because John Lennon was not a Christian. I personally am agnostic, and Irealized that this was just a hateful intolerant statement, but for some reasonevery time I want to listen to the Beatles now I can’t help but think of thatinsult; I feel as though I can’t disprove that the Beatles were"demons” the same way I can’t disprove leprechauns exist or don’texist - even though I know both statements to be absurd. Please, I just want tolisten to my heroes without having these horrible thoughts in my head. What canI do?
Just learn to ignore it. Listen to the songs you like, preferably at a loud volume, and enjoy them on their own terms. It doesn’t matter what somebody else thinks.
Think this: if you’re either a Christian or a sub-human demonistic creature, where does that put you if you’re Jewish?
I don’t think we’re qualified to deal with an obsession of this type. Seek professional advice, is my advice.
The Beatles predominantly sang of love and peace.
Oh sure, there were lots of other tangents and some sex and drug innuendo, but anyone who is threatened by The Beatles is seriously lacking a common sense gene.
Isn’t “All You Need is Love” pretty much the same as the Greatest Commandment?
Let the demons in.
Play Holy Diver loudly until the bad thoughts go away.
The Beatles demonic? How quaint. That’s like some old person being offended by Chuck Berry’s music.
Honestly, John Lennon does kind of strike me as kind of a jerk in his personal life, but I don’t see any reason to think he was particularly evil. He was just a flawed, troubled human being like the rest of us.
Since you’re obviously a Rush fan, I think you need to spend some time listening to some of their skeptically bent songs every time the preacher comes to mind. I’m probably one of the more religious folks on this site but I see no reason to think that religious fundamentalism is anything more than ignorance and/or mental illness, honestly. This person’s ravings should not be taken any more seriously than those of a schizophrenic ranting on a street corner.
Not demons, just musicians.
Remember that the human mind is open to suggestion. We absorb what we’re told, & this is a big part of how we learn things. Some persons will abuse this by telling us things that are not true; we have to learn not to believe it.
But to disprove it, well, study the Beatles, compare them to other musicians and other human beings. Are they any more demons than is Bill Gaither? Or even the fundamentalist preacher who called them demons? What if he’s the demon?
Don’t sweat it.
I know how you’re feeling, & it may take time to get over it, but you can.
i thinks it was those people who distributed small religious leaflets printed in blue ink back in the 70s. they liked slow acoustic music heavy with feel-good lyrics whereas they condemned rock-and-roll as barbaric, crude, and african (i clearly remember reading that one.)
Except Revolution # 9.
As to what to do~
Listen to the White Album repeatedly. The voices will tell you what to do.
Stop taking everything so damn seriously.
Again, fix the space bar.
Let that idiot preacher’s words run through your head freely. But in the voice of Disney’s Goofy.
Thank you everyone. I apologize for the spacing (or lack thereof), I copied and pasted the post and perhaps something went wrong. Anyway, I sincerely appreciate your advice. Just to clarify, I’m not schizophrenic; the reason why I was so obsessed over this particular topic was because of the shock value mostly - the man who stated the claim was so passionate about what he said that I was stunned with disbelief. His zealotry made me curious as to how anyone could think such a thing, but I came to realize that it was just hateful fundamentalism. I suppose I just needed some reassurance from others. Once again, thank you all.
Consider when it was written. The Beatles had broken up only a decade before, and were still a relevant band back then. (Not that their relevance has decreased since.) From our 2011 perspective, such an attitude could only be described as quaint.
It might ease your mind to know the passionate “man who stated the claim” probably didn’t actually believe a word of it.
No way! I’m really digging the new compound words, especially “Christianpreacher.” It has the same je ne sais quoi as “pinkwomansmelling” and I like it.
GeddyClaypoolBurton, Christianpreacher is just voicing an opinion. I suggest you read your Jesus and then decide whether you think the Lenonhater is truly channeling the man from Nazareth or if he’s just blathering like a schizophrenic homless dude. Personally, I think Jesus was basically a cool bloke who doled out some generally good advice. I also think he’d have liked what Lenon had to say.
I suspect that certain kinds of people who claim certain kinds of religious beliefs really are mentally ill but have found a more or less socially acceptable way to be weird in public. We used to have this weirdo fundamentalist preacher come to campus every year and preach his hateful garbage at passersby, and we’re supposed to think of him as practicing his rights of free speech and religious expression and all that, so we let him alone. No, he’s just weird! He’s not all there, and if he were talking about conspiracy theories or space aliens or some such you would know that, but we give him a pass because he’s talking about Jesus.
The world is full of messed-up people like that, in every flavor you can think of. You just have to learn to not give them what they want: your time and attention, your anger, and space in your head. Just ignore 'em and go on with your life. Remember, they outnumber you.
The Beatles have made millions of people happy. This guy can’t change that.
There’s a lot of crazy out there, but it doesn’t mean you have to believe a word of it. If it helps, you might try thinking of it this way: you’re allowing Christianpreacher to live, rent-free, inside your head. Kick the deadbeat tenant to the curb like any other homeowner.
“All you need is love …”
Actually, “demon” would have been one of the NICER things John Lennon called Paul in the Seventies!
The rest of the quote in the OP is bogus, of course.
