I’ve heard John McCain referred to as ‘Grandpa Munster’ many times.
Why is he called ‘Grandpa Munster’? Just because of his age? Ed Koch… Now there’s a Grandpa Munster look-alike!

That doesn’t make sense to me. I have heard of him being called Mr. Potato Head, though, which is hilarious.
Just guessing here, but could it be more allegorical than a physical resemblance…
i.e. Grandpa Munster (i.e. McCain) is the cheery, pleasant looking public face of the bunch of freaks that make up the rest of the Munster family (i.e. the rest of the Republican party).
Though could be reading WAY too much into it…
I’ve heard Bill Maher call him that, although I didn’t think it made any sense other than the “grandpa” part. But maybe GM was supposed to be a vampire, and is “undead”. Still, that’s way too subtle to be humorous, if you ask me. If you’ve every watched his HBO show (Real Time w/ Bill Maher) he goes on and on and on about McCain’s age.
Ed Koch has nothing on Madeleine Albright.
FTR, McCain looks his age while Grandpa Munster was played by Al Lewis, who was only in his 50s (or younger–he lied a lot) at the time of the series and was such a hardcore Wobbly that he’d find the comparison insulting.
Now, this is peculiar. There’s another senator (the name escapes me right now) who bears a really strong resemblance to Grandpa Munster. John McCain, with his cheek pouches, looks more like the mascot of Hustler Magazine.
Michigan Senator, Carl Levin already claims that title.

Al Lewis was quite left wing. He would be insulted at the comparison.
He does, however, have a weird resemblance to Colonel Tigh in Battlestar Galactica, which is going to be seriously odd if we actually have President Tigh. Even his wife looks like Ellen Tigh.
Er… I meant the new Galactica. 
Wouldn’t that make him Marilyn Munster?
