John Oliver's Last Week Tonight

Did anyone else watch? I thought it was hilarious and basically a Daily Show week in review kind of show.

It was very well written and John Oliver was just as good as he was last summer when he filled in for Jon Stewart.

What did you all think?

I liked it and thought it was basically a bonus Daily Show (which is a good thing). Just mad my DVR recording got cut off.

Basically an uncensored The Daily Show. I liked it.

It did feel like The Daily Show in a lot of ways, but it was really funny. And the interview was excellent. I thought it helped that unlike TDS, they didn’t do it in front of a cheering studio audience.

I agree.

I enjoyed it. I liked the whole thing about the Indian election not being covered. He’s finding some good stories to cover that aren’t covered by every other comic news program as well.

Plus John McCain telling the same joke 7 different times was fun!

A work in progress, but off to a really good start. A tweak here, a brush up there and it will be perfect.

Yeah, count me in. Good stuff.

I still wish he was replacing Colbert after TDS, but glad this is here.

Enjoyed the Pop-Tart ad touting breakfasty goodness - cut to Oliver: Fuck You.

Kinda makes me wish I still had HBO, tho not enough to subscribe again. Ah well…

I’m curious to see how much the little changes - the greater production value and the skits - will make this different from The Daily Show. The Pom prank idea, which you could tell was very carefully worded for legal reasons, was hilarious.

I loved the Lisa Loeb Oregon song.

As an Oregonian…I loved it too. It was so spot on, I couldn’t even be mad.

I’m not as impressed as some others in this thread. It’s good, but it’s not that much different than the Daily Show. I do expect it to get better so I’ll give it a few weeks to get rolling.

Me too! I couldn’t remember her name, though. It was “She’s the girl with nine stories who had one hit”.

The show is good. Wish I could “throw a fuckin’ Oscar at it”.

I enjoyed the show. The segment on the Indian election was funny, but the show as a whole is very similar to The Daily Show, in that it’s as much about the media’s response to stories as it is about the stories themselves. And to be honest, I didn’t really pick up on the lack of bleeping, mostly because on The Daily Show, it’s perfectly obvious when “fuck” is being bleeped, so I just hear it in my head.

Is that his real nose?

Yes. He was just happy to see you.

You’re a very silly man and I’m not going to interview you.

Finally caught some excerpts online. Must say, it is far far superior to Daily Show. Or maybe, Oliver is just funnier than Stewart.

Oliver has done some excellent segments, going more in depth than Stewart does, since he doesn’t do guest interviews, nor have “reporters”. Last week’s show dissected payday loans and exposed one of the biggest scams in America today. He’s doing a great job, IMO.
