John Prine fans - have you seen this short documentary on him?

John Prine is the main subject of a recent half hour documentary that aired a few months ago. I hadn’t realized the extent of the cancer diagnosis and treatment he went through, and I’m grateful to have him still with us and still performing at the age of 69.

The video intersperses some cuts of a young and middle-aged Prine with other footage of Prine how he looks and sounds today, along with some interesting reflections on his life and music.

The man is a national treasure.

Thanks for that. Wish Steve Goodman was around too.

Clumping him in with the other two stories seemed like a reach, especially for such a short feature, but I’ll take my Prine where I can get it. I think my favorite album of his is In Spite Of Ourselves, mostly cover tunes duet-ing (is there a gerund verb for “duet”?) with female singers.

No, but I will, as he is my god.

There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes…

Shakespeare would stand in awe.

What a lyric. When I heard that, I became a fan.

My thoughts exactly. What we need is a feature length Prine documentary.

I saw him live in 1988 or '89 in a small club in San Juan Capistrano, California. Excellent show.

Love his lyrics.

“Well we’d go out on Saturday evenings
To the drive-in on Route 41
And it was there that I first suspected
That she was doin’ what she’d already done”

I’ve seen him multiple times including a small show at his HS alma mater where he talked about growing up in the area.

I try to not miss any of his shows but there is a big labor dispute with the biggest production company in Chicago right now.

Hopefully it’s resolved by the fall show.

Well, since we’re spouting lyrics…
Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve

50/50 chance we were at the same show. Afterwards, we drove past his boyhood home.

I don’t go to see him anymore - just hard after having seen him so many time. I remember the first time i saw him 30 or so years ago. Arlo opened for him with a full band. John played solo, with nothing but a card table with a bottle and a pack of smokes.
