At the very beginning of my career, yes, although I worked at one rather than for one. The program moved off of the Job Corps campus eventually.
I still remember the day he came up to my desk and said something like “My mom days hi from Dung Beetle?”

I’m so glad to hear he’s doing well.
I hear that from a lot of the teachers around here. (Though here the blues try to put forward teacher-positive legislation but they are so overwhelmed by reds that they never have a chance.) As I said upthread, I know this is something I could never do. I regularly see teacher friends putting up Amazon Wish-lists because the school doesn’t provide many essentials and there’s always way more that they need than they can afford on their meager salary. I know a lot of teachers that have to work a second job just to survive. They regularly have kids from other classes in their room because there aren’t enough subs to cover a teacher’s absence.
Part of the problem is that many of the ones that make the decisions for our teachers and our schools send their kids to school in areas where parents can support a well funded PTA. So they don’t get that schools in the lower income sections of our district don’t have that option. And so many, especially those who see our educational system as nothing but an indoctrination camp, think that teachers are just greedy and they’re exaggerating the problems they face. As a parent, it infuriates me. Because they are pushing all the good, caring teachers that make a difference in a student’s life out the door.
I’m sorry that any teacher has to be forced to decide between doing what they love or quitting because of the politics and lack of money/support. Thank you for being one of the ones sticking it out and serving these kids.
Thank you, and I’m sorry if I weirded you out!
No excuse in my state. The Democrats are one Senate seat from supermajorities in both houses and we have a Democratic governor and we still cannot get pro-education legislation done.
My son was doing his taxes (nothing like waiting until the last second) and when the question came up on TurboTax as to if he spent money as a teacher on supplies the conversation went like this
Do you get that credit?
Yes.
You spend money on supplies?! Like what?
Notebooks, paper, pens and pencils, markers and colored pencils, whiteboard markers.
Shouldn’t the school buy that stuff?
Yes.
I agree with those who say that it’s amazing to have done what you’ve done, and all right to pass the torch: you can’t do work when you’re burned out, and you’re not obligated to suffer for the rest of us. We should all be doing out part.
As for the rest of us not doing enough: I know that’s true. The system we’re in makes sure that we’re insecure and unstable, and thus don’t have the time or energy to truly look around and make changes. I’m trying to do my part but I’m sure there’s things I don’t see, and things I could do but don’t do. Like the others, I’d love to know what you think these are. But you’re not obligated to tell us.
Several years ago, my sister mentored a young lady through CASA that she referred to only as “the teenager.” They had very strict boundaries that had to be followed (among other things, all plan-making and communication had to be done through the office) and my sister was as shocked and horrified to learn that there really are kids who sleep in the bathtub so they won’t be hit by stray bullets, and honestly don’t think they will live to adulthood, as The Teenager was to find out that people like our parents, who are not only married to each other but that we grew up with both of them and know who both of them are, also really do exist.
Yep. Maybe another day in another thread. Not here.
How’s the new job treating you, Johnny? Still loving it?
I am! Thanks for asking.
I can’t believe I posted this almost two months ago, the time is just flying by. I got a subscription to Kindle Unlimited! Apparently there are jobs where sometimes you just, like, don’t have anything pressing to do for a little while?
My new coworkers are helping me learn to relax. I’m working on it. My voice only raises in laughter. I have plants on my windowsill.
It’s good.
Jeez. Let me know if y’all need any help!
