Is there any good free software for windows (pref) or linux that can join divx AVIs without reencoding or losing quality?
Would they need to be the same resolution/bitrate?

I used to use Boilsoft’s software but they needed to be the same width/dimensions to be joined. Of course it wasn’t free either. Neither is Jfuse but Jfuse joins together files (AVI MPEG DivX) that where saved using different methods. To give an example all of my video recording I did last summer, using different resolutions screen size I was able to join them all together to make one DVD sized movie. It doesn’t do anything to make them look alike while playing it will go from good to bad resolution according to how I recorded it.
But using something all the same but in different parts, it goes together perfectly.
Jfuse costs 20$ though, but it allows you 9 joins for free.
I looked around a lot for free joining software and I couldn’t find anything maybe someone else with better googling can find something for you but if it is for a project you’re working on, the free trial of Jfuse may be all that you need.
For freebie just-the-basics software, I like Peck’s Power Join which works well in most (but not all) situations. NB: The info on the page is “incomplete”, just download and try it. There are other joiners listed on that site.
Virtualdub is the way to go.
Seconded. It’s free, easy to use, and works really well.
If you want to make sure that you just join without re-encoding, you have to select Video > Direct Stream Copy.
Also, programs like Peck’s Power Join and VirtualDub require that the avi files you’re joining have the same size, framerate, etc. If they don’t you have to encode them to the same specs before joining.
Thanks everybody.
VirtualDub is perfect for my needs.
