I live in the Blue Ridge mountains. I go on about it incessantly, I know. Forgive me.
A benevolent fate has decreed that both Mrs Chance and myself are in the right industries at the right time and do pretty well. I could easily decide that these facts allow me to pinch pennies and lord it over the servants. Instead I choose to support the businesses I feel are worthwhile even if they are more expensive.
My house is 130 years old. Some people buy homes…I bought a project. I could save a lot of dough by shopping at Home Depot. Instead I shop at Nichols Hardware in lovely downtown Purcellville, Virginia. They charge more (they have to if they want to get by) but they’re my neighbors, not a big faceless corporation. I could shop at Giant but I choose to shop at smaller grocers like the Hill Tom market in Hillsboro. Lesser choice, better service, better people (or at least I know them).
That’s why this is worthwhile.

BTW everyone - when I referred earlier to “certain comments” about crossposting, there is nothing sinister implied. It just came out that way, LOL! It’s just better to keep the effort in one place is all, because people get confused and start posting in the wrong places, I was told.
