I’m writing a quick little article about the joint ventures of a company in China. I was going to include a blurb about the law regarding JVs.

I remember hearing something on NPR ages ago about how a foreign company has to use joint ventures to do business in China, etc. etc., but I wonder what the law is today?

Solely foreign-owned enterprises are allowed or else China would be breaking WTO regulations (what’s new?), which they are a member of.

Looks like you were right. They used to only allow FDI via JV, but they lifted that in 2001. Solely foreign-owned firms are now a more common form of FDI in China than JVs.

Yep WOFE (wholly owned foreign enterprises) are quite easy to start, approx $50,000 in capital and you’re in and that gets you a resident visa as well.
