I was going to mention the most common hijack in the Pit but then I realized that to mention the hijack you will create the hijack, like saying Bloody Mary or Candyman or Beetlejuice. And I don’t want to do that sort of thing.
Bloody Marys are better than Caesars be honest they don’t have fish in them as a major ingredient (I understand Worcestershire sauce has some anchovies).
This heresy has already been disproved many times and bringing it up yet again is just a display of ignorance and bad taste. As I recently mentioned, the so-called “Bloody Mary” isn’t even a drink, and I suspect was invented as a prank.
Also, clams are bivalve molluscs, not “fish”.
Anyway, to bring this back on track, Jon Stewart is a brilliant comedian and political commentator who I’m certain appreciates Caesars and drinks them all the time.
I think it’s tough for hosts to deal with their venues too. Comedy Central probably is less strict than Apple+. I only saw his themed shows on that channel once because I’ve never had means to do so.
Maybe TDS can do more absurdist or caustic humor until political developments come up.
Maybe they could, I don’t know, do a drive-around tour of places that have strong aerosol fragrances. They could go to a place like Palestine, OH or Imperial Beach, CA. (Being by the beach with my trash-picking clients was burning our eyes there: sea water and untreated solid waste - Gross!) They could go to pleasant-smelling places like Gilroy, CA or Hershey, PA. Then they could talk with advocates, publuc figures, about getting funding to clean up.
This idea wouldn’t be visual enough to make good content though so I know my concept’s not gonna work. It would just bide time until someone running for office randomly dies.
This is what a MAGAt would say. I do not think we are doing better to have the liberal version of MAGA that tears anyone down who does not toe the line.
So if it turns out that supporting Israel’s current campaign adds more votes than it subtracts, that’s all we need to consider wrt the current situation in Gaza?
I finally got around to wathcing the Youtube link in the OP. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting given the level of vitriol placed against him. It was funny and clearly wasn’t completely both siderism as he makes it clear that its a choice between a nice elderly gentleman who has lost a step and an evil elderly monster who has lost his soul. I think the main target of his criticism wasn’t so much Biden as it was how the age issue was being handled.
His complaint seemed to be that the Dems are whistling past the graveyard trying to pretend that it isn’t an issue rather than confronting head on a problem that many people can see with their own eyes. And secondly that fixing America doesn’t start and end with the election but will require a major overhaul outside the individual in office to find a way to bring the country back towards a place where we all live in the same reality.
I don’t know that I agree with all of that, but its arguable, and voicing it certainly doesn’t paint him as a traitor to the cause.
Fair point. I’ll clarify. I’m not encouraging any and all acts that help Biden win, including clearly immoral ones.
What I think is a duty of decent people is, at a minimum, don’t promote any notion that Biden may be unfit because of his age, or that Trump is anything other than a vile incompetent. “What an ancient bastard Biden is” jokes assist the GOP. Go easy on the “old Joe” gags.
I watched both of JS’s new shows and what a breath of fresh air!! I thought the show from Feb 20 where he rebuts the criticisms was especially brilliant.
And to respond to various people above, his only “responsibility” is to be honest and to make people think. By telling the truth about Biden’s inability to communicate (which is obvious to most of us, I think, regardless of his age) he’s not supporting MAGA. When the Dems run Biden against Trump and hope to convince everyone based on logic that they should support Biden, they risk losing. They need to run someone inspiring and articulate. Frankly I hope they choose someone else at the convention. We can’t risk losing this election.
It’s not literally impossible, but it is “literally impossible.” The self-inflicted political damage would utterly and massively swamp out any disadvantage accrued by running back an elderly moderate incumbent with a speech impediment and a long-standing tendency towards gaffes. The DNP is not insane.
The time to convince Biden to withdraw was a year ago. Now the window has been slammed shut and nailed closed.
No, that’s completely true and nothing new. One of Biden’s strongest skills is his ability to come across as affable, folksy, real, and down-to-Earth. It comes at the expense of not being a clear and commanding speaker. He’s got strengths and weaknesses like anyone and that’s a major weakness of his.
I’m a fan of President Biden. But I disagree with this. His speech now is noticeably different than even four years ago. I think he can still be an effective president, but I fear it will cost him votes.
I don’t think we disagree. I’m not saying he’s exactly the same as he was 4 years ago. My point is that he didn’t go from a slick speaker to a guy making flubs in the past 4 years. It has always been a weakness.
Has it gotten worse with age? Sure, you can compare videos and he’s a bit slower and raspier, less animated. I’m just saying it’s not like he’s lost some ability he used to have. He’s had problems his whole career with that. It’s just that age has made it a bit worse.
This can’t happen, no more than the Republicans could have not made Trump the nominee. They don’t actually choose the nominee at convention any more than the Electoral college get to choose who they vote for.
And it also was never going to happen before that. In fact, I’d say everyone else is being too conservative. Biden has been the presumptive nominee since 2020. He’s the incumbent, and if he were to retire, he’d be a lame duck. The incumbent has an advantage (that the Republicans are definitely doing their best to chip away at with these talking points). We need all the help we can get, and that means running the one guy who has beaten Trump–and basically every other Democrat who could run.
I hate the focus on Biden’s age, because focusing on it makes it more important than it is. I hate that it’s the most important thing that Jon had to cover immediately after coming back. And I hate how he actually he did it, for reasons I’ve said upthread.
Pushing Biden as the old grandpa who has lost a step but is better than the monster isn’t great. It paints him as weak and ineffectual. The way to deal with his speech is to show his actions. If you must, point out that there are other reasons why, and then show the sharp things he has done.
And then the way Jon responds to criticism bothers me. That was not at all a fair response to Mary Trump, for example. She said that what he did was “both sides,” and he accused her of something completely different, using snark and mockery instead of argument, painting himself as some sort of victim. If he wants that dialog, then engage in dialog, rather than “I’m so sorry I used my mouth and brain” bullshit victim crap. Stop making people who disagree with you out to be disingenuous morons, rather than people with legitimate disagreements.
It actually sucks seeing Jon use his persuasive abilities when it goes for something you don’t agree with. It sucks seeing that he uses the same tactics I see online that I call out.
