Jon Stewart returns to The Daily Show! (Not for Politics, see P&E thread)

I was quite disappointed in JS’s both-sidesism. I feel it is terribly important for anyone with any influence to do whatever they can to prevent another Trump term. Sure, very few Trump voters are likely TDS viewers. But at the very least, he should’ve said, “Sure, Biden has his issues. But he CLEARLY is the lesser of 2 evils. In fact, he isn’t evil. So it ought to be no choice.”

(Hope this does not go over the line - but I’m having considerable difficulty seeing where the line is in this thread.)

Or maybe Stewart understands that if he acts like a pure cheerleader for Biden, he’ll lose all the moderate and right wing audience and wind up preaching to the choir. Perhaps a little more balance will keep a larger audience of moderates and conservatives, who he can then persuade.

For example, I watch Jon Stewart. I won’t watch Steven Colbert, because Colbert is utterly predictable.

Jon Stewart can surprise you by not reflexively repeating the Democratic talking pints of the day and sometimes even taking the other side if he thinks that’s where the truth happens to be on a specific issue, as it sometimes is. And yet, it’s very clear which side he is on, which is fine.

I think this is an excellent point. I’m a little confused by everyone that is thinking it is Jon’s job to be a cheerleader for Biden. That was never his style anyway.

Stewart is playing 4D chess (and if anyone can do that he can).

I tend to agree. He’s not trying to be a complete partisan hack like Greg Gutfeld.

Is Stewart’s job to be a shill for Biden or the party? Of course not. If the party wants to advertise on Comedy Central then let them buy the 30 minute block. Stewart is a commentator on reality as he sees it. He’s not there to pretend there is no problem on the Democratic side. He’s not there to whistle in the dark like many are.

I think Stewart is too smart to swallow a right-wing talking point (or any talking point) uncritically.

Maybe Stewart is trying to egg on the dems into doing something. Trump is currently winning this “Biden has dementia” talking point. Stewart even begs the dems to show us Biden being on his game when it matters. Stewart is not pointing the way for republicans. He is pointing the way for dems.

Because arguably, it wouldn’t be considered by many as being a “cheerleader” or “shill,” it’s just wanting people to acknowledge a potential looming dictatorship and folks like him and you dying in concentration camps.

Not that that necessarily has an impact on what’s effectively rhetorically, ofc. Just why some are upset.

Moderating: Seriously, you don’t realize that pushed into political? Go to a political thread for this. I will hide it for you. No warning, but really close.

I created a Pit thread. Unsure how the backtrack links work, and where they are to be avoided, I’m breaking the link here:

Mods? If you feel it’s worth shifting a few of the CS posts over to the new Pit thread, I’d be grateful.

The back link issue is only a concern if you’re linking to a thread that insults another user in the thread title, because the back link will have the insulting thread title in a non-Pit thread. If the Pit thread isn’t about another poster, the back link rule is 100% non issue for you.

Here to Pit Jon Stewart?:

I’ve gotten somewhat less liberal as I have gotten older. Or perhaps I’ve stayed about the same and it’s parts of the left that has gone further. In any case, I tend to agree. I spent many nights during Bush, especially his second term, and Obama watching three or four hours a night of MSNBC, then the Daily Show, and then the Report as various shows and hosts came and went. Add John Oliver in there as well. I have watched very little of anything of all that after 2015 or 2016 because I think Trump broke all those people in a way that it became tiresome preaching every single night.

I loved the Report. Colbert’s character was hilarious, the bits were often great, and even though it was clearly modeled on the O’Reilly Factor initially it could be a good parody of all cable punditry. Ever since he got the Late Show I stopped watching early on and when I do see it it seems like yet another bad Trump impression that he’s enamored with is guaranteed.

My take is that it’s one episode so far. If Stewart had come out sounding like the current MSNBC punditry show lineup I don’t think I’d continue watching.

This week’s episode was about Tucker Carlson’s big boy trip to Moscow, and I’d call it a vast improvement.

Yeah, that was Stewart in top form!

See here where Carlson’s interview with Putin is exorciated by … Putin! As a waste of time sycophantic interview conducted by an idiot.

Yep vast improvement. I did cringe briefly when Jon started his “sorry that you’re so partisan” non-apology about his first episode, but overall I think he walked the line well. An actual apology would kill the show, his only options were to ignore the backlash or jokingly confront it. I think it was OK.

Yep, Putin made Tucker look like a twat both ways: first he emasculates* him in Russia, then he makes fun of how weak Tucker was afterwards.

* Sorry if this is a sexist expression…I can’t think of a more neutral one.

Saw the clip on social media, where Tucker is getting badly dragged for gushing about carts with coin locks (as already seen at every Aldi), cart escalators (as already seen at every IKEA) and bread (as seen in every fucking supermarket).

Just to add to that, around here, most of the stores that did implement those coin locks have disabled them as an unnecessary nuisance (in these cashless days many people never carry change) and newer stores never implemented them at all. But I’m glad that Tuckie is impressed by the concept!
