Here is some Trevor Noah comedy.
I like the part on “classy pedophiles”.

And the part, which we have proven, where he would be “labeled as Black” if he came to America.
I’ve been touting him loudly so obviously I think that would be a great choice. The article smells of pure rumor, though.
Yes, he certainly would be. And if this isn’t just a random rumor but is actually under serious consideration, that raises the questions: one, is Comedy Central ready to have two ‘black-hosted’ shows in a row in that 11-to-midnight slot–are they truly that “colorblind”? (Having two ‘white-hosted’ shows in a row is obviously less likely to cause comment, as it’s seen as being the norm.) And two, if Comedy Central is serious about Noah but not particularly colorblind, does that mean that Larry Wilmore’s *Nightly Show *is in trouble?
I wonder if there’s any consideration of Larry Wilmore taking over TDS and CC developing a new half-hour followup.
The magic of the TDS/Colbert Report was the one-two punch of “informative/funny” being followed with “funny / satirical.” Stewart gives you a good riff on the headlines and the correspondants and guests take the show in other directions. Then Colbert followed it up with a half-hour that was almost always reliably damn funny and often insightful.
Wilmore’s current show is, I think, a little too smart for its timeslot (and the panel stuff is wildly hit or miss). I want to follow TDS up with something a bit lighter.
I think Wilmore could do extremely well in Stewart’s chair. He’d be damned good at doing the headlines. He’s a solid interviewer (and could possibly bring in panels sometimes to shake up the Daily Show format). And, honestly, I think having the correspondants there would help him – he seems to be good at working with others and I could see him being better at desk segments than Stewart.
And then the second half hour could go to somebody who could push it in a lighter, jokier-but-still-smart direction. I think Pete Holmes could be an excellent choice. He’s goofy and “effortlessly funny,” but definitely not averse to going into the trickier territory of politics and religion and such. But there’s plenty of folks out there who could fill that chair.
Yeah, I agree. The wording is very vague (“according to a person familiar with the matter”). I’d love to see some corroboration from other sources.
But I must say, of all the names being thrown around in this thread and elsewhere, Noah may very well be on top of my list. He’s intelligent, worldly, incredibly funny, and has a kinda moral depth which was integral to Jon’s satirical perspective on such a wide range of issues. Check him out on WTF with Marc Maron for an in depth conversation with him. Really, the more I think about it the more perfect he seems. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I don’t think having two black-hosted shows is really an issue (and I would hope it isn’t.) I suspect it’s more important to CC to have TDS remain a general interest show, as opposed to TNS which seems to be primarily but not exclusively focused on African-American issues.
I doubt Jessica Williams truly disqualified herself – I think she was just being humble. I seriously doubt she would really turn it down were she offered it.
I like her a lot too, and I really hope they strongly consider a lot of women comics.
She might take the job, but I don’t think she was just being humble.
She’s funny and talented, but I think she’s a little too confrontational and a little too young, and I’m not convinced she’s good at being the butt of the joke or would be good at making celebrity interviews or slow news days work. I’m certainly not saying she’d crash, but I’m not convinced she’d be a good fit, either.
Isn’t Wilmore’s show doing kinda poorly? I know it’s still young, but its ratings are much lower than what Colbert was getting. Most people I’ve known that started watching it have quit. I think @Midnight has been getting equal or better ratings when it was in that time slot.
I honestly don’t know the numbers, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I was a regular Colbert viewer and I’d say I’m watching maybe one in ten episodes of Wilmore now.
But I genuinely think they gave him the wrong slot. I think he could make a great TDS host. His own show is a little too serious as the followup to TDS, and the panels are too loose to keep me paying attention.
Give Wilmore The Daily Show, have him crib the existing Headlines -> Desk/Correspondant piece -> Celeb Gues format but maybe replace the last two with a panel once a week. Find a funny-but-smart jester to follow him. I think that could make a fantastic hour.
Otherwise, I think Wilmore is going to continue to (unfortunately / unfairly) struggle in the 11:30 slot and whoever they hire for TDS’s chair is going to have an even steeper uphill climb.
Possibly the only other established person I can really see doing as well or better on The Daily Show is Amy Poehler. She could be amazing, but I’m not sure she’d want the job.
Trevor Noah is an interesting one. I could see it working. I could see it failing hugely.
A lot of the other names I’ve seen tossed around don’t strike me as people that either have the political chops, the hosting chops, or the crazy obsessive work ethic that let Stewart do so well. He had a very particular skill set, and even other immensely talented comics aren’t necessarily going to excel in that format or want to subject themselves to that schedule.
I don’t disagree. I liked Wilmore’s segments on TDS and I’d hoped his own show would be better than it is. But I don’t think Comedy Central is going to say, “Well, he failed at 11:30 so let’s give him The Daily Show.”
Can’t link but the New York Times is saying Trevor Noah is the guy.
Here’s a link.
Yep, it’s official and it is a great pick. He’ll be awesome.
Again, I love that as part of his routine he says, “They told me if I go to America that they will call me Black.”
And now he is here, we are calling him Black!
Is it possible Stewart quietly told producers awhile ago and they kind of hired Noah as a potential host back 6 months ago?
That’s what it smells like. He never did “field” pieces like the other correspondents. Just sit-downs with Jon.
Just a note that Trevor has already had two years of headlining his own late night show in South Africa, so he’s not a complete newb just coming from standup only.
Wonderful news! I really couldn’t be happier about the choice. He’s gonna be great!
