What did you guys think of the new episode? I was surprised to find that I liked it. Maybe the new guy will surprise us and just crush it you know, indeed.
Head writer Elliot Kalan also left, didn’t he? The show’s humour must be very different.
I haven’t watched it yet, but the clips I’m seeing on the news are pretty funny. I hope to catch up tonight.
I enjoyed it. Noah had apparently been doing some practice shows for an audience, and it probably helped, he seemed fairly comfortable and not too terribly nervous.
It didn’t seem too different to me. I’m guessing as the show goes on they’ll change and adjust things more, but this episode didn’t seem a whole lot different than a Stewart episode.
It pretty much followed the Stewart template, which was not unexpected. Noah seemed a bit nervous and manic, but those are some pretty big shoes to fill. I imagine he’ll settle down after a few shows.
My favorite bit was the one concerning going to Mars, with the new correspondent (sorry, can’t remember his name).
Let the record state that there were no jokes about Fox News in the first show. New direction!
With that said, back to the routine of The Daily Show at 11 (albeit with a new host) followed by Stephen Colbert (albeit on a different network) at 11:30. Has anything really changed?
Not bad, but John Oliver was so much better his first day when he filled in for Jon.
Yeah, I definitely got the same vibe of him. I didn’t get the impression he’s in over his head. In a couple of weeks it’ll feel like he’s always been the host.
I thought that was easily the worst part of the episode. The whole black guys can’t do this because white people routine felt like it was directly lifted from some third rate stand-up comedian’s set. Flowing water on Mars is a big discovery and the best they could come up with was a racial bit that would have been old 20 years ago.
Yeah, well, John Oliver was taken, and it seems like half the alumni of the show now have their own spinoffs. Noah’s presiding over what amounts to a new show with a new team… and being judged on the merits of Jon Stewart’s best years.
Hope they don’t slaughter him too bad. He has promise.
Yeah, I didn’t love that part, but it was the first time that correspondent had been on. Hopefully they’ll figure out how to use him better. But even with that somewhat tired material, Noah was good as the straight man.
My Favorite part was the whole “I just bought a condo” bit, well done.
I liked the show just fine and it will only get better is my guess.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
That’s a good point. I laughed a lot, but looking back at it now, it didn’t really have anything to say. Noah had already used a ‘I’m like the new stepdad. And I’m black’ joke up top, which one could say is a preemptive strike against idiots. The Mars bit should have gone in a different direction.
So Comedy Central is allowing “bullshit” and “shit” to go out uncensored (but not “motherfucker”). Not too unexpected after Stewart’s final tirade.
I thought it was a strong beginning, on the whole. Noah is an appealing personality, he should only get better with time.
Just saw it on DVR. Nicely done - he stepped into the existing TDS machine and took it out for a spin. I look forward to seeing what happens as he feels comfortable expressing his own voice.
Not at all bad. The comedy gods surely were smiling when they offered John (Boehner) as the old leader being replaced. He couldn’t have asked for a better starting joke and they did it beautifully.
The Mars bit died a horrible death, true. Correspondents have always been a weak point.
Anyone old enough to remember Conan O’Brien’s first week (not of his current show but of his first show)? Nervous and gawky as hell and took a while to fall into stride.
I’ll give him a few weeks. He’s never going to be my real daddy but we might get to where we exchange Christmas gifts and text occasionally.
I thought it was a promising start. Besides I remember when Stewart started on the Daily Show and it was uneven at first. I think overall it was a pretty solid effort and look forward to seeing more.
Pleasantly surprised that it was better than I expected. I was impressed by much of the opening desk piece. Agreed with whoever said correspondent segments are the weakest link, so I cut them some slack there.
I enjoyed the episode. Not awesome, but certainly fun enough for my tastes.
But they censored the joke about the Pope’s dick.
I liked it better than Colbert’s first Late Show. Noah’s opening segment was right on. The Boehner segment was good starting, but kind of fell apart in obvious “Jon is gone” shtick, and I agree that the Mars segment was awful.
Noah was not in control of the interview. I’m sure he’ll get better - it is something standup does not prepare you for. When Stewart started it was “I’m amazed I’m talking to this famous guest” - by the end it was often famous guest saying “I’m amazed I’m talking to Jon Stewart.”
I look forward to seeing where Trevor takes the show as he gets comfortable and starts to make his own mark. I liked his standup shows on Netflix - let’s see if he becomes a good interviewer.
So, will Jon ever come on as a guest??
