I’d say generally only in that thread, and not cross posted to other threads. (Unless it’s a response to a request for a cite or something similar.)
From my POV, what we are participating in a thread for is to hear the views of the people in the thread, not to be linked over and over again to something someone else said somewhere.
I can’t have a conversation with a link.
And even so, the ones I strenuously object to are the ones that are just clickbait titles with zero substance if you follow the link. There’s enough spam out there already. We don’t need to import clickbait.
Just to put an official imprimatur on this, the warning I gave BrainGlutton was not for cross posting, but for responding to a mod note with insults and a stated intent to ignore the note.
The insults were made in the Pit, where insults are permitted.
As for “stated intent to ignore the note” where do you get that? The words were as follows:
You are dismissed with the contempt you deserve.
There was no actual disobedience. Nor was there any stated intent to disobey. That is just your own peculiar interpretation of the words.Expressing contempt is not expressing disobedience. It is perfectly possible to be contemptuous of a moderator while still obeying his instructions. I’ve done it myself several times.
Insults are permitted in the pit against other posters, which can include moderators when they are not posting in their official capacity. In no case is it acceptable to insult a moderator in response to something they’ve posted in their role as a moderator.
I don’t feel that my interpretation of that post is remotely peculiar. At any rate, as mentioned, BrainGlutton’s response to being mod noted was not contained wholly within that thread.
I hope you won’t think that I’m being silly if I tell you that I really enjoyed seeing your screen name. It was the first time that I had ever seen it and I just laughed my silly head off over that.
