Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D.

“Dum Dum” Dugan and Sharon Carter both appeared in Captain America. I don’t think either will show up because I think Whedon wants both of them in Cap 2.

I’ve been away from comic books for decades. Isn’t Fury still white in one Marvel universe and looks like Sam Jackson in the other?

I beg to differ. Her skin tight pants were the star of the movie.

Hmm…maybe Iron Fist & Luke Cage?

Gabe Jones was there, but did Sharon Carter make it?

He used to be white in the main Marvel Universe, but he’s turning black now.(Fury had a son with a black woman which has just come to light. Son needed blood transfusion from ol’ One Eye, which transferred the Infinity Formula to him. Dad is retiring, and son is taking over the family business.)

She was Cap’s caretaker at the end after he woke up in the present.

I’ll set my TiVo for that.

Memo to myself: Buy a TiVo.

Felicia Day as Spider-Woman, and Amy Acker as Squirrel Girl.

The list of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

I just now cued up the ending credits, and she’s identified only as “SHIELD Agent”.

(“Carry the flag shore to shore for America – from Hoboken to Spokane! The star-spangled man with a plan!”)

And the actress already has a hit TV show (bit of a pattern here).

:dubious: Have you seen any science fiction TV in the past 20 years?

Even Doctor Who has effects that are more than adequate to handle anything SHIELD would require, even if they include the Avengers as more than a random cameo. (Heck, the Saxon arc actually included a Helicarrier!)

SHIELD would require an only slightly higher effects budget than any other spy series. And that would be mostly spent on the villains.

The Marvel universe is a science fiction universe, sure…but it’s one where most of the really out there stuff is the exclusive domain of superheroes and supervillains, or else completely invisible. (Very Human Robots*, telepathy, and so on.) Even more so the movie verse.

And even most of the visible super-stuff isn’t anything that will require major effects - build some fancy-looking armour and gun props for the villain goons. Give someone the ability to fly. Maybe have an invisible villain once. Someone super strong. Someone with lightning/fire/whatever powers. (Or sonic powers! Can’t get easier than that.) Very low-grade stuff. (And you’ll note all of the Avengers have powers that fit into this set, except for Hulk, who was extensive CGI…the effects budget of the movie mostly wasn’t spent on them.)

There’ll be some bigger stuff, obviously - have a Helicarrier establishing shot in the premier (unlikely that our lead characters will be based on one, but likely that Fury and his crew will appear in the pilot), and a CGI monster once or twice. But you don’t need to spend big bucks for most of what SHIELD would need.

  • Has anyone suggested a Life Model Decoy for how Coulson could have survived the movie?

HOLY.

Given Whedon’s sense of humor and fanservice…there’s a nonzero theoretical chance Squirrel Girl could actually show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That makes my nonzero theoretical day.

Your ignoring my point.

typoinc:

Given the Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming up, perhaps she and Rocket Raccoon can team up as the dynamic rodent duo.

Eh, Smulders just didn’t have anything to do in the movie. I don’t think she’s the best thing about HIMYM (even though she’s quite lovely), but I’d be willing to give her a chance.

Credit where it’s due - Fox does at least take chances. I can’t think of another broadcast network that’s given a fairer shake to scifi/fantasy television.

No, I’m not.

You’re obviously ignoring most of my post, though, since I specifically point out that there is almost nothing in the movie that couldn’t be done just as well on a TV budget.

Iron Man and Thor have spectacular but cheap powers.

Cap, Hawkeye, Black Widow, the entirety of the non-Avengers SHIELD crew have non-spectacular abilities.

The Chitauri home dimension is barren, not particularly realistic, and shot through a purple filter. The Chitauri who talks to Loki has pretty basic practical make-up.

Until the battle with the Chitauri, the entire movie was the kind of thing that could be done easily on a TV budget - albeit a ‘premier or finale’ budget, due to the Helicarrier shots, and Hulk’s use in the assault on the Helicarrier.

You’re right. I guess that was just bloggy speculation at the time.

The fact that she looked like a stand-in for ScarJo in IM2 didn’t help with confusion. I just assumed it was supposed to be Black Widow but they didn’t want to tip the ending so hard and actually get Johansen for it.

Sharon Carter (grandneice of Peggy in the movie) will definitely play a part in Cap 2.

I’d like to see Felicia Day as a viscious Hydra agent. Sadly, I have no idea if there’s an established viscious female Hydra agent who would be a good match.
